Well, we didn't see who exactly they stuck up on their ship. Mal told them to get a few bodies, but I don't think they "used" all of them.

I find it very hard to believe that they would have used Book. You know that Kaylee was not happy with using their friends. It is a pretty good bet she told Mal to stick it when it came to using Book, or the little boy for that matter!

if you watch the deleted/extended scenes, mal tells them to put book up front. they started to protest.. and he said book was their friend and they needed to honor him as such (or something like that). check it out if you havn't.
