Some folks use their idle CPU's to help SETI, or to try to crack someones 256bit crypto key. I use mine to vote for Firefly.
If I found ET, what would I do with him? Would you really believe me if I claimed I had found him?
Why would I want to crack a key to get a "Drink more Ovaltine" message?
I can see results on tvvote overnight. I can see that we will be #1. I can make a difference in the standings of my favorite show.
Maybe a few folks will look at the top ten and think, "Firefly? What the #@$k is that? Hmmmm, number one show of all time? Maybe I'll check it out..." And thus another BrownCoat discovers the 'verse.
I want quotes from Serenifly to become as common as quotes from MontyPython in film and on TV. I want the use of those quotes to evoke the image of BrownCoats (as opposed to nerdy geeks that run around quoting Holy Grail 
).
And I want a pony and a plastic toy rocket ship...
