How do I make a Banner?

Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to make those cool banners? Websites? Tutorials? Step-by-step?

Try www.gimp.org

They have a free image editing program that you can download, and a bunch of tutorials on how to use it. You can even make animations!

I use Serif Draw Plus, an old version I got for free from a web design magazine. You can sometimes get free downloads of their older programs at www.serif.com - they don't have the cool tutorials gimp have, but if you mess around with it you'll start to get the hang of it
