PR is right that the shots in OMR are of lights. I may be misremembering the episode; there is a shot in the captain's bunk of something nozzle-y that isn't one of the lights.

i am in Architecture school and it angers me how often a bathroom door is installed to swing into the bathroom... all the buildings i ever design will have the bathroom door swing out so once you wash your hands all you hafta do is push...

S'paw, the latest thing is to dry your hands *with a paper towel* (blower-dryers are horrible germ-spreaders and should be phased out) then use that towel to grasp the knob on the exit door, dropping the towel into the wastebasket that has been placed for the purpose. So your designs should leave room outside the bathroom for either a basket or an easy-to-reach wall-unit for disposal.
As for in-swing vs. out-swing doors, the main
consideration should always be safety. Codes cover surprisingly small details, but they're usually based on experience and studies.

FloralBunny: yes i am aware of codes and i do use paper towels to open the knob/pull door open. but an architect never has the authority to decide on air blowers vs. paper towels. thats up to the owner 99% of the time. door swings are something an architect can define tho so... hey if your an owner and you want to give me 100% decision, cool. i hope you have the money.

SOTHPAW & FLORALBUNNY, may I suggest that public bathroom doors open up like the doors on the Enterprise in Star Trek. That way if the door opens out one doesn't have to touch all that nastyness and if someone is coming in they won't get hit in the knoggin with the door while they have both hands holding their male(or female) parts because they have to go so bad

would love it if i could design pocket doors that would roll/fold/slide into a wall or up into the ceiling. however... no on wants to pay for it.
and FloralBunny- that could very well be a quote from Meis but thats my mentality too. many US building codes require swinging doors in cases of emergency. i say use gravity, if there is an emergency all doors slide open from counterweights. but thats my dream world.
i'm still looking for info on fold up toilets. if anyone has one or seen one is there a company name you could give me.

Here's a design I've seen for bathrooms on a train of all places.
You get in from outside by pressing a button on the outside wall. The flush for the toilet is controlled by a foot switch (you just stand on it to flush), the sink is automatic, you just hold your hands inside it and you get water at one end, and soap dispensed at the other. It's paper towels for drying your hands, and another foot switch to open the door to get out.
In theory, this means that you can visit the bathroom without touching anything apart from your own body, your clothes or a paper towel.
