If Serenity was powered by Hydrogen power cells (like the ones being researched now for cars)a by product would be water-good ole H2O.
You would have to get rid of itbeause of the weight. The infirmary would use some, so would the lavotaries, cooking, water for Inara's tea etc. I'm not sure if enough would be produced for bathing though.

Nurse. The handwashing thing bothered me too. It went something like this:
"Yay! He's washing his hands! Captain Hygiene! Wait, where's the soap? Ew! NOW HE'S RINSING HIS FACE!? EEEwwww... Well, I guess just water's better than nothing. Still no way that was a full 15 seconds of scrubbing though. Oh, we're into another scene. What did they just say?"
Detracted from the first viewing a little for me.
I'll just think happy sanitizing gel thoughts.
PS: On the common cold from oral sex thing?
a) You probably got it from kissing them before/after.
b)Use a condom or dental dam if you're worried about exchanging microbes.
c)You really don't want to do a swab of your mouth or nose to grow out in microbiology class. Really.

You could also stretch wash-water reserves by taking "Navy Showers"--
1. Wet Down for 30-45 seconds.
2. Turn off water, and soap up.
3. Turn water back on for 60-90 seconds of rinse-off.
It gives you a passable sluce-off for under three minutes of water flow.
Oh, and a scientific side note: In any closed air recycling system, you end up with more H2O at the end of the journey than you started with; the human metabolism actually generates water as a by-product of resperation.

Seriously how many people do you think wash their hands BEFORE they go to the toilet?
Also from your comment on catching the common cold,... touching your bits without washing your hands first is dirty, but letting someone perform oral sex on you without washing down there is all fine and dandy? Your prerogative I guess.

Yeah, no, I think the Navy shower thing sounds like a good idea. Bathing probably wasn't on the top of their vocabulary. I do remember Zoe saying something about taking a real bath. Now, if she said real bath, with real on the front, then she possibly is used to fake showers, or simple wash downs. That could account for that. I don't remember how well I remembered that quote, though, so I might be totally off. Asking for an ep, you say? Ha. 
I don't even know if it really happened, much less know what episode it was. So, all of you, Browncoat Powers activate! And you know, help a sistah out. Hmm, I don't even talk like that. Sorry.

That's not a shower head, it's a light fixture!!! You see one just like it over his desk, plus it's reflective, plus the same shape of light exists in Simon's bunk, which you can see in the background, lit up, at the end of Jaynestown. No shower heads!
Anyway, I think Joss said something about the toilet setup having a submarine feel. Never been on a submarine myself; anyone know if it's set up that way?
Also, it's very true that hydrogen fuel cells would generate water, which would be very handy in space...

Ok ppl we live in a dirty world. What makes folks think that living in a verse such as the Joss verse would make it any cleaner?
From parents cleaning a baby's butt, to ppl cleaning out their animals pet dish to countless other things, what's the big deal? If someone goes to a theater( if you saw Serenity there) and uses the public toilet you can sanitize all you want. You still have to reach out and pull that door handle to get out.
Germs are everywhere. Money is one of the dirtiest things that you can touch. Your home telephone carries tons of germs. Why wouldn't space be the same way? I'm not saying a person shouldn't attemp to clean up but we can't live our lives in a bubble.
For those of us that remember our si/fi, think WOTW (War of the Worlds). Our little friends saved the planet.

I agree with Rocketjock. The human body generates a large volume of water as exhaled moisture, sweat and urine. In a closed atmo system, it makes perfect sense that ALL sources of moisture would be collected and "scrubbed" through filters, with non-aqueous waste being combusted or compacted or just dumped (we're not a very tidy species.)
Consider the waste water that drips out of a home or auto air conditioning unit. Some is ambient moisture from the humidity in the air; more is exhaled moisture.
While this might not make large amounts of water available for long hot showers, it does mean that our BDHs would have water for basic uses.
The key here is intensive recycling: effective collection and scrubbing/filtration. This is something we should ALL be paying more attention to. We live in a closed system - Earth - and we're rapidly using up our resources with little consideration for the long-term implications.
