Believe me when I say that it pains me VERY much to admit, but I think I have to agree with KANEMAN here. Sorry you had to listen to his crap... I'm dealing with it on another thread of mine and if you look around you can see he pretty much has something lousy to say to everyone.... let's just say, he's really got a way with words. This just happens to be the first time I can remember that I've actually agreed with the motives behind his verbal abuse. I can assure you that the vast majority of us here are very friendly folk.
I must admit that not much a fan at all of police or government, as centralized as it is today, in general. I do, however realize that the individual often transcends the organization which it represents. I am one of the few Americans left who are fully aware of what their rights are and if you had been following me that long (assuming I didn't have a couple of beers and you weren't following me home from the bar) you wouldn't have had to wait for me not to use my turn signal, because I would have pulled over well before that and seen if you passed me or asked you why you were following me. Too many people are afraid of police and if they show the police that they are afraid, then that gives them undiserved power. Respect is earned, and I do not give it out to somebody just beause they wear a badge. There are far too many corrupt cops out there and the fact that somebody has one pinned to their chest does not make them better than me. This is not to say that I don't act polite when I get pulled over. I've actually been pulled over nearly 20 times and I've walked away with 3 tickets in my life.
You seem like a nice, friendly guy and you're probably one of the good cops. It doesn't hurt that you're a Browncoat either. You should probably expect that with a post like this, you're going to get the stay at home dads and the soccer moms thinking that it's a heartwarming tale of Browncoat meets Browncoat. At the same time though there are many of us who, like the Browncoats, belive that if they lived the rest of their lives without ever seeing a cop again, it would be too soon. It's all about reading your audience, and you're talking to a bunch of Browncoats man! Many of which, I would think, don't take to kindly to alliance types.
I am curious how you were able to walk away from that situation without giving him a ticket. I've been told by cops the last couple of times I've been pulled over that "I really don't want to give you this ticket, and I'd love to give you a warning here, but I've already called it in and I have to write it now"... I think I recall something about the squad car camera being on too. Your own damn vehichles spying on you while you're working so you don't give away too many freebies. It always seemed to me a means for the government to dehumanize traffic cops. It must be a tough job ruining peoples day... I know I couldn't do it. In your professional opinion, is this really the case, or were these cops lying to me about not having the choice to give a warning after calling it in?
Anyways... welcome to the 'verse. It's interesting to see all the different kinds of people that Firefly attracts.

Every police agency that I know of stresses discrepancy. 99% of the people out there are hard working “good” individuals. So for example, I see some one going over the speed limit by 15 mph, yes I can pull him over and warn him and it is not a necessity to give him a ticket, a warning would suffice. People tend to think that we as police officers have some sort of a quota, here is how it really works. The more tickets you give the harder it looks like your working. Its as simple as that, if I just drove around warning every one my higher ups would think I am what we call a “slug”(some one who is not willing to work). In my city I don’t really give traffic tickets (there is more than enough crime to keep me busy usually, so traffic tickets are wwwayyyy low on my list). And if a cop tells you he has to give you a ticket it is BS, discrepancy is HUGE. A warning will almost always suffice for general traffic tickets.
And I really didn’t follow him for that long; I should not have put that I followed him for ten minutes.
Here is how it went
He made an illegal maneuver; I pulled him over, checked to make sure he was not a wanted felon, and warned him about his illegal maneuver. And then I basically threw in some brown coat talk
For those of you who say I am abusing my power, I laugh. I did nothing wrong here, I did not leave my beat to follow him, I did not harass him, I simply kept my eye on him.
And if you think that is an abuse of power than I hope to god you never see some of the stuff I have seen,
I consider myself a hard working cop that does not abuse his power, every one is on even grounds with me. I pulled a little bit of humanity in to the job, I see nothing wrong with that and will continue to work the way I am for the rest of my career.

Poor Todmcfly. Here you think you're sharing a nice browncoat moment with other browncoats, and suddenly you're acused of abusing your powers as a cop and being a bad, bad man.
Well at least it's not dull. :)
I hope you don't take it too seriously. People sometimes get bored and then ANY excitement will do.
I would actually enjoy it if I was approached by a stranger to discuss the 'verse. Even if that stranger was a cop.
You don't have to defend yourself to anyone. You did nothing wrong.

just want to say welcome to the browncoats. Its nice to know there are browncoats in every profession including cops. Maybe it woulkd be nice to settle dow nthe tension in how you heard about firefly? have you shared the wonders of it with others, including the other police at your precinct?
I just have to say that I never agree with kaneman, and his tone(like othershave said) leaves much to be desired, I do share the concern. Now what you did is not an abuse of power and it is all fine. But speaking as someone who is not a cop, who is brownskinned(South Asian actually, and probably a target for racial profilling at airports and such), I haev to say being pulled over by any cop is not fun and scary, especially, if I knew I did nothing wrong, or what I did wrong was really really small.
I am a law abiding citizen, I have never gotten a speeding ticket nor have I ever been pulled over, but to deal with cops gives me the heebee jeebese. I understand police are a necessary workforce and msot of them are good people and work hard to solve hard crimes like muders andsuch, its just maybe all the incidicents I have heard of abuse either through the news or through second hand info, freaks me out. Plus there is the race issue. I just can't help it.
So what you did , was well good natured fun, and I won't fault you for that, but I jsut wanted to share the side of the story of someone who is not a police officer. If it had been me that was pulled over(I should put browncoat stuff on my car), while yes I would be happy to meet a fellow browncoat anbd it would be cool, let me tell you, being pulled over like that would not be fun for me, and I would not enjoy it, and would make me think that the cop may be "out to get me". Call it paranoia, but it is there.
Anyways hope you enjoy yourself here, I don't mean to be rude, or dont want to spoil the fun for you, I just wanted to share my apprehensions. Hopefully Followmal wil lbe along to give youa virtual browncoat its great, anddont forget to as I am sure floral bunny says, question and dare I say interrogate the buffet.

You really should attend a shindig. Meeting Browncoats is the absolute best. Find a local groups and see when they meet. I know SF Browncoats meet often as do the SoCal Browncoats. Not sure where you are from but shindigs are awesome.
