Tristan - I've been involved in house-hunting. Which means that Cold Comfort Mountain has bogged down a little, and soon everything I own will be in boxes. Most of my books are already boxed, so I had to buy some more. Naturally.
Plus side - bigger house. Hence more bookshelves.

Mavs, my grandpa was a cop and has many, many guns. Seriously, sit in a chair in his house and you're within reach of one. I was drilled and redrilled on gun safety when I was twelve, would have been earlier if I spent great amounts of time with grandpa, but I don't tend to get out there much. My dad showed me where he kept his gun when I was 13, and I never touched it. If I came across a gun, ever, I would have total respect for it.
Here are the rules:
1) Know where the safety is. Keep it on unless you are firing.
2) Never point a gun at anyone. Never put a gun down pointing at anyone, or yourself. Never point a gun in anyone's general direction if you can help it at all.
3) Check and recheck to make sure a gun is empty before you put it down, unless you are intending to fire it again and/or put it in a holster. STILL do not point it at anyone or lay it down so that it points at anyone. Even an empty revolver with the chamber hanging out is not to be pointed at anyone!
4) Know where your clips are 
Yes, I absolutely think that anyone who is going to have guns in their house should teach any child living there or who is there often 1) not to pick the ruttin' things up 2) that they aren't toys, don't pick the ruttin things up 3) they can kill people, don't pick the ruttin' things up, and 4) how to safely handle them in the proper setting, and make it clear that, barring anything drastic, that is the only time they are to pick the ruttin' things up.
See, I love guns, and sharp things, but I'm as gung-ho as the next person about safety. I just don't think 'safety' means 'no contact'.

PR- excellent gun safety rules!!! My dad's gun are all in a locked cabinet and the ammo is in a separate locked drawer. All guns also have a gun lock on them and have their firing pin removed unless my dad is using them. We were all conditioned never to touch them without him right there... prevents a lot of potential danger.

This is such fun. I don't know if some of you, those near my age, remember the show 3-2-1 Contact or the fun mysteries they had on there called the Bloodhound Gang( yes I know it's now a group)but I managed to get a copy of 3 episodes on video and am showing my students. I always loved this. When I was a kid, my teacher would show the Bloodhound Gang every Friday. I'm hoping to get enough tapes to be able to continue the tradition:)

Tristan- No worries. 
I'm asking because before Husband started the Armory, I was violently anti-gun. Didn't want anything to do with them, and truly kicked up my heels when I discovered the Super Blackhawk.
15 years and 1 Tidbit later, I'm much more comfortable with them, I can deal with them being locked up in the house...but Husband thinks Carson should start learning gun safety and how to be around guns. For frak's sake, he's only 5.
Granted, Husband grew up in Gopher's Crotch, Kansas where guns are commonplace and he claims "farm kids" learn about guns at an early age. This I (kind of) believe...but we live spitting distance from Washington, DC. Guns here are for drug disputes and gang violence.
Please, I respect your opinions. Am I wrong?

I think any kid under 8 is simply not capable of understanding the consequences of actions( this is verified by research), but after the age of 8 would be a good time for the basic NEVER touch this without daddy instruction. Based on learning theory and developmental stages about age 10-11 would be a time for more intro to guns stuff like PR was talking about.

Heh, that's kinda funny, Mavs, Kansas is where my dad grew up and where my grandpa still lives. I think my dad said he could fire a gun by the time he was eight or nine. Five might be a little young to handle guns in any way, but it's never too young to stress that they are not to be touched, especially unsupervised. And it should be easy to keep them out of his reach now, too.
And, to give you a bit of advice from my dad, don't let the boy fire a .45 until he's mostly grown, or the kick could have him clocking himself in the forehead.
