First of all, that title. When I saw it, I was overcome with a fit of overwhelming laughter. That just made my morning. And you know, I'd pay to see my countrymen riding yaks whilst kilted.
Weapons: When my father either dies or decides to dispense of them, I'll own two shotguns (one skeet, one pump-action), a deceptively small and enormously powerful hunting rifle, and a geared down pseudo-assault rifle what fires .22 bullets. Needless to say, if and when a Zombie Apocalypse(TM) occurs, I'll be ready.
I wish I'd get Dad's Browning lever-action, but that's going to my brother. It's a sweet little gun. *sigh*
EDIT: I just remembered. I'm also getting one of those rifle's the Canadians were saddled with in WWI. You remember the one which killed the people using them by throwing the bolt straight back into the poor bugger's eye? One of those. Expect me never to fire it. I like having both eyes.
Tristan: What you're describing is a medical condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder. It sucks. Lots of people suffer it, even the mentally balanced. For the unbalanced, it can lead to long stretches of depression, listlessness and lethargy, simply because we're deprived of light. It really calls to question whether we can truly be considered independant of plants. Without sunlight, we wither and wilt.
Needless to say, with the cold weather, pissin' down mist-rain, and ten-hour days I've got right now, I've got a hell of a SADness going on.
I'll be alright. I've got my Firefly. I'm feelin' a need to watch Jayne get hit by a wrench...

I think I like James' description of the effect of the rain better than mine, though I usually can't stand the DayStar myownself.

Welcome - It's always great to read someone else's thoughts on the loony things we talk about here.
Tristan- I get that way, too. It's very gloomy here, and your rain is projected to reach us later on tonight. I just want to curl up into a ball.
My mom had SAD, and if those light boxes had been invented before she died, I think she would have used it. I have it a little too, but not like she did.
But, RIMG is right on the money- there's nothing as soothing as listening to the rain as you fall asleep...

KelKhil, I can understand with a little one running around. I have a great deal of respect for you for being that responsible. I get tired of hearing horror stories about how little Jimmy got ahold of daddy's gun... No, it's too early to start a rant. Just know that I thank you!
RIMG, I live in the middle NE-ish of Alabama along I-20. I normally like the rain, too, just not when I have to go to work in it...
We do sometimes get a little beyond PBS programming here.
JTD...huh! Thank you for that description. Makes sense, sorta. While I am not a vampire, I try to avoid the sun as much as I can; but it's always nice to know it's there. Wow. Thanks again...now I have something to think about today!

I have a 5 year old, and Husband's rifles and guns are all in special cases with locks. Anyone who lives with guns and children should do the same.
I wish it wouldn't rain; Husband and I haven't raked leaves and they are piling up! Nothing worse than raking wet leaves...and we were planning on yardwork tomorrow.

Though I don't have any, I agree with the extreme care / locking of guns and other weapons around children. My two boys are destructive little monsters with just their bare hands (or other toys, or crayons, etc.)
Tristan, you are much closer to me than I thought (and consequently that explains the rain). I am 100 miles south of Atlanta in Warner Robins. Maybe we can work out some time to meet up before DragonCon (305ish days away).

Just got over a week long strech of rain here. Man it was gloomy. But yesterday the sun came out and it is out again today.
So PR how much snow did you get out in Colorado???
Sorry couldn't resist and my friend that lives in Denver is at work right now so I can't harass him.
So being that I don't follow the Con scene much...I have always wanted to go to GEN Con but thats about it. Is Dragon Con always in Atlanta? Are there packages if you buy tickets for rooms in the hotel it is running in? Where do you look up said info. I might have to try Dragon Con if I can save up the money. Which could be tough cause my friend that lives in Denver is getting married this spring and me and the fam have to go out there cuz I am the Best Man. Long ways from Michigan and the tickect prices are terrible. I would drive but something tells me that a 20+ hour drive with a 5 year old would not be fun.

Ugh, don't talk about that horrid stuff. I had to drive home through it yesterday morning and it was slushy and nasty and visibility was horrible. I think we got a few inches, and we got off light. Of course it started as rain; if it had been snow the whole time here we would have gotten 10-15 inches like those farther south did. Mountain schools all closed down, several other schools closed down, icky icky icky!
But today it was all melted. It was bone-chillingly cold and I had to scrape off my car before I could drive home, but there wasn't any slushy icy snow on the roads, for which I am thankful.
We will not go quietly into the night

Mavourneen, one of my pet peeves is weapon safety, and I don't even have children...does that seem right to you?
My mini-rant was not aimed at anyone here. I know we are all responsible when it comes to the important things. I hope it was not taken as an attack! 
RIMG, yes, you are close. We may need to hook up with those Browncoats around the Atlanta area and see about a Shindig in the near future!
