Oh on a side note - this note taped to the water cooler by my boss, i thought it was amusing -
'Rota's have been completed for November and december, including the christmas period, I hope everyone is happy with them.
However hope is a precarious seesaw and is bound to come crashing down to earth sooner or later.

is it a reference to the books or does it have meaning IRL?
'cause you've piqued my interest and worried me slightly. (If you've read the books you'll know why!)

It's a logical fallacy:
Quote:
A straw man argument is a logical fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position. To "set up a straw man" or "set up a straw-man argument" is to create a position that is easy to refute, then attribute that position to the opponent. A straw-man argument can be a successful rhetorical technique (that is, it may succeed in persuading people) but it is in fact misleading, because the opponent's actual argument has not been refuted.
Its name is derived from the practice of using straw men in combat training. In such training, a scarecrow is made in the image of the enemy with the single intent of attacking it. [1] It is occasionally called a straw dog fallacy [2] or a scarecrow argument.

EDIT:
Quote:Therein lies the rub. "I hate the commercialisation of Capitalism!" He says "I prefer to be hit over the head with a log which is the only alternative!".
But he seemed to be on the side of anything other than capitalism!
So is this indicative of what non-capitalists believe? is the situation merely a choice between glorious personal choice with the slight inconvenience of commercialisation or no choice but to be hit over the head with a log?

cool.
I understand now.
See, before that, i'd only seen straw men used in the context of a group of excessively rich types with a belief that 'civilistation' is a disease and hate most humans the same way Hitler hated the jews, and therefore spend large amounts of time capturing torturing and killing them in nasty ways.
the mere possibility that there might exist a straw man outside of fiction was a little alarming.
but no, i get you, cheers for letting me get on with my day with out fear of them.
Read Micheal Marshall Smith if you don't have a clue what i'm on about.

I've only just got in from work. I've driven like 300 miles today (no exageration).
Very Tired. I think I might go to Kung Fu tommorrow.
