So I bought the book in question as my show of solidarity since the online gaming thing doesn't really enthuse me. It's a decent enough read - a bit slow I supose in the begining but picking up toward the climax - though I am most ceratinly not it's intended audience. Which is to say that it is a young adult novel writen for kids in the 10 to 12 age range. It deals somewhat with a lot of the issues that books targeted at that age range usually deal with: bullies, incomprehensible authority figures, parental abandonment, and the like. The main character is likeable enough and there is a certain sense of wonder to the whole book when we do get the fleeting glimpses of the world around us.
It's week points include a general lack of plot resolution - for which I would blame the fact that it's the first in a series, a milieu that seems at once overly complicated and underedevloped - with characters, creatures, and cultures given the barest of mention and then left by the wayside. I would probably have prefered a more focused treatment of one or two aspects of the strange new world that the heroes find themselves in than the scatershot of intersting things that we get.
I certainly think you could do worse than this as a book for a preteen child interested in science fictiony things and the story that is set up for future books does show some promise.

damn... this shows how long it's been since I've been able to tune out of my 120-hr. workweek & tune into the 'Verse and so, I'm going thru recent threads to see WHAZZUP and, guess what(?), I see somebody who can quote Yul Brynner from 1956! Whoa! I thought I was the only browncoat older than Book...
...so, continuing scanning... wish I was seeing some good news though - YOU know: stuff like renewals, sequels, less corporate oppression... less desperation on the part of the BDBrowncoats...
We can't die, Bendis,& you know why?...

Hey thanks F/M,
I hadn't seen this site yet - just too damned overworked to play very much but, this looks very promising & I'll tend some slime there - I MEAN..."spend some time there"...
Jeez... wish I understood the etiquette of spoonerizing vs. malapropizing...
