*runs into the room, looking around wildly*

What did I miss? Damn, have to go spend an hour catching up with the story.

Edit: I'll work up my move that eventually gets Simon sitting on a stool while Kaylee patches him up and send it to CapnRahn. *frowning* I'm sorry that Kelso had to bow out...our fellow RPers are dropping like flies! Hope CapnR can take over Niska for the time being.

Edit: This turned into a gargantuan post (catching up), so be prepared...

I agree. These are my concerns as well.

We have the gunrunning, which we should probably close out.

Closing out of this one is pretty necessary to end the episode at any point.

There's the apparent Niska in Simon's brain, which could continue for a while.

Not to mention Niska currently on the loose, running around the ship. Niska on the loose needs to be resolved; Niska in Simon's head could go on... indefinitely, I'm guessing.

Quote:

There's the River, Thorne, Slight, Damon interaction, which could go either way.

Not really sure what to do with this, since it really only just started. I'd hate to leave it hanging as completely open as it is now; it needs SOME kind of resolution, if only temporary.

Quote:

Also the Thorne, Mal, Inara triangle, that I enjoy, whichever fellow wins.

I'm guessing Thorne could end up being a recurring character that gets under Mal's skin where Inara's concerned (a la Atherton Wing in Shindig).

Quote:

Kaylee apparently has some secret about Serenity. Plus she and Simon are finally becoming an item.

The secret could be an ongoing thing, or could be something resolved now - maybe related to whatever Early did to sabotage the ship in the very beginning. Personally, I think the Simon/Kaylee interaction would continue throughout several episodes, the way their tension does now...

Then there's Rowan, who seems to have an interesting story in there somewhere.

I feel the same about this as the emerging Blue Sun stuff that's coming up... Not really sure what to do with this, since it really only just started. I'd hate to leave it hanging as completely open as it is now; it needs SOME kind of resolution, if only temporary.

Would it be worthwhile to keep this entire crew for another episode or two? Would it be interesting to have each character, or grouping of characters (Zoe/Wash, Simon/Niska/Kaylee, Thorne/Inara/Mal, River/Slight/Damon/Simon/Thorne,
Rowan/?, Book/?, give direction to an act or story arc?

I have no idea how RP is supposed to work, so I may be just babbling. I enjoy the surprises in AiG so far, but sometimes things get a bit too hectic. Maybe if we had an Idea where we were heading, even if just for an act (baselined at 100 posts, perhaps) we'd get to a conclusion sometime. Or maybe we don't want to reach an end, and just sort of stream-of-consciousness off into the distance."

This is the first time I've done any kind of online RP. I agree that there are times when there is so much going on (and usually all at once) that things get a bit jumbled, but I like the interesting directions that the story has taken. In a live pen and paper RPG, we'd have a GM/Director who already had an idea of the story arc and some set obstacles along the way, but that would be somewhat fluid and malleable to the characters' (and players') actions/interactions. Since we don't have that structure set up here, it's more difficult to figure out some means of wrapping the story/episode to everyone's satisfaction. (We don't have a GM that can say, "Great! You've accomplished ____! Game over!")

My assumption was that when we got to New Hikido, dropped off the cargo, and got paid would be then end of this particular episode, but that was at the beginning. With some of the interesting twists and turns we've had, it's harder to see how/if this story would conclude.

Squee: Episode vs. Act... we're still working that out. Until recently, we were thinking this RP would be the equivalent of one

Until recently, we were thinking this RP would be the equivalent of one TV episode of Firefly; however, it's become quite intricate and it may have to be more than one "episode" to get everything wrapped up to our satisfaction. A TV episode has a teaser, the opening credits, 4 or 5 'acts' (I think), and a coda that shows the resolution (think Mal & Inara in the cargo bay at the very end of Shindig). We've obviously FAR surpassed that, so if we were thinking in terms of episode, we'd have to claim this as a two- (or now three) parter.

We may be limiting ourselves by trying to control this RP as a single encapsulated episode, which in JW format, is teaser, 4 acts and the coda. If we think of this as a miniseries instead, I think it will help in the general structure. Besides, as has previously been stated, we've already reached the edge of a single two-hour episode.

Back in the day, miniseries meant a full-week event of up to four two-hour episodes (North & South comes to mind). That may sound like a lot, but the way we're going, I think we could easily utilize that kind of format.

Just a little more food for thought.

Folks I think I screwed up ... i feel ill today and dinna follow my own suggestions ...

Anyhoo, checkout the SIMON freakout post ... I finally wrote it ...

but I think it may change a few Players moves...

Let me know if I should change my post if it is too much...

I just thought it was an appropriate action, considering Simon's mindset at this particular moment.

Yep, we have 2 ACTS - 9&10 (6 to 10 Minutes apiece- TV wise) and CODA (anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes)left in a 2 parter.

The # of acts in an episode depends on how many commercial slots sell.

A single American produced 1 hour episode, with commercials edited out, is usually 38 to 46 minutes in length.

The mini-series idea has MUCHO merit ... lets see if we can streamline and finish this 2 part EPISODE {AiGR} THEN impliment a Miniseries ...

In my opinion, Niska is destined to escape. He is too good of a villian and information source to dispose of yet.

The guns ... I forgot where they are! Anyhoo, that would be the only MAIN ARC to close out before the CODA.

The rest of the character, rerlationship and other ARCs can be carried over to the mini-series.

SEGUE TO...
SO, if everyone like Channain's idea: What plot ideas for the MAJOR arc(s) for the mini-series do we want to toss around?

I agree that Niska is too important to kill off just yet, but I think that it would be interesting to introduce a new villian if we are going to continue this as a mini series.
I just got a picture in my head of the Firefly crew having to join forces with Niska to 'defeat' a greater threat. Desperate times... well its just a thought, lemme know what you guys think.
Oh, and thanks for the explanation, Astriana, the discussion makes a lot more sense now
I think the Simon/Niska thing could go on for a while, and I like the lov triange with Inara, Thorne and Mal. And the Kaylee/Simon thing is definately a yes in my vote
The River/Slight/Thorne thing doesn't have any long term development that I can see, it looks like something that could be wraped up easily, depending on what we want to do with the rest of the story.
Well, that's all I have for now... I'm off for school, so I'll be back in a couple hours.

Another suggestion I would have is to move the "Last Time on Firefly" info on a different thread. It's a lot of great information to bring a newbie up to speed, but it's becoming a huge "first page" that promises to be giganimous once all the synopses are posted.

I would say list the previous act (or whatever we end up calling them) thread and synopses in the most current thread. Then put in the thread leading to the "Outline" or somesuch of all the previous acts. Then list the Gunrunners - that is to say, US - and the usual disclaimers. Like so:

RP - "Adventures in Gunrunning" Act 8

Act 7

address for act 7 thread

Previously on Firefly
Prior acts and greenrooms for character discussion and development
address for Outline thread

Players
Directors
Disclaimers, et al.
Definitions
Guidelines

Seems like a lot of work. And since it is my idea, I'd be happy to set it up. Also GULP if the new director needs any assistance, I'd be happy to do whatever I can.

(put an "n" next to an "o" and what does that spell?)

Shiny idea, Channain! This is actually something I meant to do once all the synopses were written. (Guess I'll have to step up the synopses-writing efforts! )

Also, since Channain brought up the "new director"... It seems that we're seeing the need for some direction in the RP at this point. I would like to offer my own self to be said director. CapnRahn has offered to assist (and so has Channain, apparently! ), and between us, we can solve a lot of the questions we've been having recently, as well as those we've had from the beginning. I will post more on these things a bit later (probably this evening after work).

What say ye'all?

Oh, in answer to Channain's riddle:
(put an "n" next to an "o" and what does that spell?)

"On?"

My vote goes out for Astriana as director and Channain for co-director.
I can see things really becoming much easier and more fun for all involved.
