Heh. After graduation I was looking at a lot of Applied Anthropology programs, and was seriously considering the one at USF. How do you like it? (I started a family instead, but still consider pursuing it in the future.)

Anyway, I'm working on your survey...

Well, I've done it. Even though I spend more time lurking than actual participation. With a little luck we'll be doing our own shindinging over here on the East Coast. As it happens, the first thing I always do when I get on any computer is to check out the new images in the Blue Sun Room. You never know what's going to show up in there. Anyway, bump! Also, (not to hijack the thread or anything) does somebody want to take a sec and tell me what all this Forsaken business is about? I dunno if we already discussed it, but I'm at a loss.

What's the Forsaken? From my view, it's talking and sharing with with friends while giving a merry hi-yo f*ck you to those who take things too seriously. The title, the group name, and some of the specific mentions (burning bibles, for example) seem to be done to lampoon the attitudes and actions of some religious extremists who seem very quick to consign to Perdition anyone who doesn't act, talk, think, believe and live within certain guidelines. In other words, it's yet another example of human tribal behavior.

Of course, I could be wrong on that. Completely, partially, or merely infitesimally.

And now, back on topic:

Sue, will you be making the aggregate results publicly available? Or possibly your write-up on the results? I'm kind of curious to see what others had to say.

Yes, I will be making the paper to anyone who wants it. There is an option when you fill out the survey to have the paper emailed to you when finished (and I'll likely put a link to the pdf here as well).

Well, I'm only about a month into it, actually! However, I did have to choose between AAnthro and the Communication doctorate. I got accepted to both programs, and it was a difficult choice. The thing that really flipped me into AAnthro was Dr. Elizabeth Bird as the Dept. Chair (she wrote books on fandom and audience participation, and I referenced some of her research in another project I did -- she's now my advisor!), and the fact that the Departmental web site (as well as interviews I had with both Dept. chairs)really showed a lot of caring and more of a "family" feeling here than did Communication (where I had been warned about turf wars and issues with graduate assistant working conditions there, and people not being able to complete degrees because of all the infighting).

And the fact that they gave me funding didn't hurt either...

My external concentration is Communication (trying to get 18 hours so I can teach there as well), so I feel like I'm getting the best of both.

What's your area of study? USF is great for medical & biocultural anthro, as well as meso-american anthro and archeology. Seems like a good department overall, with a good reputation (just wish USF would spring for some new facilities for us soon...we're in one of the oldest buildings on campus, and it is a little gloomy in the GA offices especially...down in the basement...)

I took the survey, and realized how horribly un-involved I am in any fandoms. I look at the pretty pictures (moving and non-), I post here every now and again...
