You know, I had never even thought of that. You're right, the last 10 minutes of Ep. III pretty much sucks all the magic and mystery out of the Original Trilogy (and I have to agree with Randal on Clerks II, screw LotR, Star Wars is THE trilogy).
My main problem with the trilogy was the scientific explination of the force. The whole midichlorian subplot was painful. Couple that with Anakin's Immaculate conception and you have a recipe for disaster on your hands.

Can't I just look at the "Prequels" in the same way I look at Highlander 2? As if they were an abberration and have no bearing on the storyline?

Lucas did bring in other writers to help polish the dialog (Carrie Fisher on Ep.1, Jonathan Hales on 2, and Tom Stoppard on 3), so while he admits it's a weakness for him, he did try to get some help.
And, in the "good things Lucas has done" catagory.: He just donated $175 million to his alma-mater, USC.

Watching a video of my left foot would be better than Highlander 2. But my lumping it in with the Star Wars "prequels" was simply a way to convey to you the level of my disdain.

yeah the actors are getting blamed for bad writing and worse direction:
there isn't a cast in the world who could over come the problem of being stood up in a line and made to proclaim a lot of obvious statements in important voices.
In the episodes IV-VI Lucas had help with dialoge & characterization from Lawrence Kasden, one of the greatest dialoge writers ever.
I'm sorry ChrisIsAll, I have to hate Star Wars I-III because it sucked the life out of the earlier movies I loved, ruining their stories by attaching this pedantic, and mainly pointless, prequel. Pointless because there is little or nothing we are told in the prequel that we hadn't already been told in a more interesting and exciting way in episodes IV-VI (in my opinion).
