I was talking to a friend this weekend, and he pointed to the lessons of Yoda....
SO the 'first' trillogy wasn't exactly what a lot of peeps wanted- just watch them (or not) for what worked for you! It's all Star Wars, and Lucas did what he did with them, yelling about it won't get you anywhere.
Anyway, this is what I learned. And the first trillogy makes you all ready for an even better one IMO!

I will admit that I liked episodes 4-6 better I did enjoy the first 3 well enough. It took me until episode 3 to really appreciate episode 1.( Minus Jar Jar of course). You had to see the Anikan that wanted to help everyone and was so nice it made your teeth hurt. it made the transformation to Vader that much greater.
While there were places in all the movies that I would have added more I think episode 2 had the best opportunity to be great.
Example: The sandpeople. In the scene when Anikan attempted to rescue his mother and she died. I think that that scene should not have ended where it did. That is where Lucas should have shown the first taste of what Vader was. Not gore. But lightsaber fights are never that gory anyway. just show him in his full rage and how powerful he was with it. I think that alone could have saved that episode.

My only complaint about the first two prequels is that the actors he chose to play Annakin weren't up to the task. Jake Lloyd was pitiful, and Hayden too petulant. I've read reports that he actually can act, but I've not seen anything else he's done yet. As for Ep. III, the fact that we see his transformation to Vader, and see that Padme's twins are named Luke and Leia, it totally negates any suspense those revelations impart to Eps V and VI. Revenge of the Sith should have ended with us thinking Annakin had died at the lava pits, and there should have been no mention of the birth of the twins. Future generations could then experience the story from the first and get the full dramatic impact.
Oh, and I consider the Kenobi/Jango fight in Ep II to be one of the most dazzling things I've ever seen on the big screen.

The real failing here was terrible acting combined in an unholy alliance with embarrassing dialogue and incredibly unbelievable romance between the whining jedi crybaby and the lovely, lovely Padme. Did she have a British accent every few syllables?
And I hate to say it, but Samuel L. Jackson - love ya, but I never, ever for one second believed you had midichlorians anywhere near your bloodstream. I have always thought it was a brilliant and risky move for Lucas to cast unknowns in his original movies. What's next - Madonna and 50cent in Episode 7? How about Anna Nichole Smith and eminem? Bret Favrrerrerr and Shakira?

If you get the chance, check out "Shattered Glass". It shows Christensen can act, if cast in the right role (a kvetchy, needy, brat). They run it on Sundance or the Indy channel fairly often.

They can all act, everyone who was in the prequels was a great actor. I don't know why but it's as if the prequels just sucked the talent out of people.
If you look at what they did before it's great, if you look at what they did afterwards it's great, and if you watch them in the prequels ... the only words that can describe the quality of acting are profanities.
Not just who they got to play Anakin, everyone was below their normal standards, most were very far below.

I blame the director for the sup-par performances. You all know who I mean. Usually, if a movie has more than one wonderful actor doing...not so good it's because the director (or someone similar) said "No no! Don't do it like that! Do it like this." And by the third movie I think some of them were just getting through the contract.
Anyway, I didn't really hate them. I enjoyed parts of all of them. And they weren't really bad enough for me to hate. Just bad enough to make me go "Meh". Not enough emotional resonance to hate.
Don't get me wrong. I can rant about them but most of my rants are, at thier core, focused toward Lucas. Him I have issues with. I think those issues could turn me to the dark side if he continues down this path.

The dialogue in Eps 1 through 3 was just terrible (I can't imagine how Lucas actually got worse at writing dialogue with time... ) but I thought the... well, the "background" or the context, or whatever you call it, was pretty intriguing.
I'm going from fast-fading memory here, but I remember how striking I found the pre-Empire Republic -- it was really snazzy, with lots of neon lights and advertising and a commercial consumer economy. It was pretty much North America at its crass glitziest. I could see how the "purity" of the Empire could have seemed kind of attractive -- no adverts to be seen in Eps 4 through 6 -- and how quaint the Rebel Alliance was, in a way. There had been a generation during which memory of the bad parts of the old Republic would have faded, so that they really didn't remember what it was they were fighting for, only what they were fighting against.
I was also struck by how either Ep 1 or 2 (can't remember now) basically started with a trade dispute -- not easy questions of good and evil, but the nitty gritty of keeping a really, really big civilization fed and watered and entertained at reasonable cost and for a reasonable profit. I quite liked all the grey in Eps 1 through 3 -- I was never really sure who was on the "right" side of a dispute, since absolutely everyone seemed to have multiple agendae, even the Jedi Council, which I had expected to be a wholly noble (and unpolitical) enterprise.
Anyway, despite its many flaws, the Star Wars cycle had its moments.
