I think my father got promoted while in prison camp in Germany. I think it was for time served more than anything else. Can you believe he was shot down on his final mission? Our family is known for it's unusual luck.

I know someone mentioned something about a white spot by book's head, my pet peeve is also about Book's death scene. The FIRST time I saw the movie, I remember thinking, 'whoa, book's hand is really bloody when he puts it on mal, mal's gonna have a nice handprint for the rest of the scene', and book puts his hand on mals face, leaves a mark around his fingers, and then in the next instant, mal's face is COMPLETELY clear. I notice this every time, I noticed it the first time, it's such a shame cause it really takes me out of the death scene.
The real kicker tho, is in the very next scene, with Mal and the Operative-in-screen, Mal has a big bad blood stain on the proper side of his face. So it's there when book's hand is there, it's there afterwards, when mal needs to look cool, but it's not there for that critical moment where Mal looks at dead book, his handprint still glistening on his face. That might have looked cool, instead, it bugs me.

Yep , Traveler , I find it completely plausible that your father was shot down on his 'final' mission . Happened to a lot of pilots ; a frequent occurrence , as a matter of fact . 
I'm just happy that he survived to tell about it and be your dad .
Being that you're in Milwaukee , you ever get up to the 'big show' in Oshkosh in the summer ?

I was very fortunate to have arrived at the Oshkosh show when they had a B17 sitting there for people to walk through. I went to the front where my father was stationed as navigator.
There was nothing between him and the sky but plexiglas. Talk about out on a limb. Even with the plane on the ground I got dizzy.
How a Nebraskan that was never higher than the second floor of his home could sit there 1000's of feet in the air I can't imagine.
I would tell the story of how he got shot down but it would fill several pages.

I've been in a couple of B-17's myself , but of course , never quite like that !
Recall the first time I ever saw one , dropping retardant on a grass fire in California . Truly a majestic flying machine . And fairly tiny , at least on the inside .
I'll take a look at the url you provided . Thanks for that ! My family's flying stories would fill a few pages also . My father and grandfather both worked for Mr. Hughes' aircraft company ; and my father worked for Douglas as well . Me ; third gen flyer . Fortunate to know a lot of pilots , test pilots and astronauts myself .
Navigator ; quite an esoteric art , particularly before the modern navaids and automation . In junior high school , my algebra teacher was an ex-Air Force Navigator . Quite an interesting fellow . An influence on my own choices . I went to school for celestial nav , due to my interest in astronautics .
I used to know an engineer who worked first for Seversky , then Republic , then Consolidated , then Hughes , then FAA , then retired . Was aboard the Spruce Goose inflight . Once the CAF brought a B-24 here , on which he was a design engineer . While everyone else was distracted with the -24 , I climbed the nosewheel ladder to the CAF B-29 , got into the cockpit , and leisurely took my time sitting in all the seats !
Another teacher I had was a bomber instructor-pilot , first in B-25's after his combat tour , then in B-29's on the island-hopping campaigns in the Pacific , also as an I-P . Once a smart-ass kid in my class asked him , " Mr. W- , Why are you so ugly ? " Mr. W- responded , " I've been in 2 airplane crashes , what's your excuse ? " - And after the war , he was a CHP trooper when the Spruce Goose was brought from Culver City to Long Beach . Then , in his most daring career move , he became a drafting instructor to ungrateful schoolkids !
There was an infamous incident a number of years ago , when an impatient air traffic controller berated an old-timer pilot from America for being somewhat unfamiliar with the layout of the Tempelhof airport . " Haven't you ever been to Berlin before ? " , he raged , to which the American pilot coolly responded , " Yes , I have , but the last time was in a different Boeing , a B-17 ! "

We kind of went off the original thread. But nobody is yelling at us.
Berlin was where my father got shot down. But by the time he landed he was miles away in some farmers field. After the war he left flying to others. I think he had enough for one lifetime.
I have not come across many airmen, mostly run into infantry. I suck them dry for their stories. I can be a leach sometimes. But first hand knowledge beats reading it in a book.
There are only a handful of B-17's flying now. Couldn't make a good movie. Would need computer graphics to make it look a full squadron.
I'm sure if you Google B17 would get even more pictures.
Well I got to get to bed, but this has been nice.

Out2theblack, cool story about getting onboard that B29. I've always wanted to climb aboard one of those.

Well Traveler, Between you and Out2theblack there are some stories that could be told. I think its crazy that you two know so many cool people. I don't know anyone compared to the job titles you two know.
In Iraq OIF I and OIF II, we (Marine Corps) were running out of grenades when we were clearing houses. So we started to use rocks instead. Throwing in a grenade every few houses. No the rock didn't explode or anything, but it was enough to make people hesitate and that's all we needed.
Unfortunately, we lost a lot of good men because we would kick the door, and they would rig the door for it to explode as soon as it was opened. Head to head we could walk on most countries including Iraq. If it wasn't for IED's and rigged doors we wouldn't have near the casualties we have now.
Sure we could have shot the door with a M203 grenade launcher, but what if there was civilians' inside? I was in OIF III, but I have spoken with the Marines who were there. These are their stories, I have my own but this one came to mind. MY 2 CENTS :) (by the way, unless it is shot from a gun, grenades don't blow up, it shoots metal in different directions, up and out)
