A discussion. When you posted your original questions you started a thread. All of the replies to your first post as well as all subsequent replies (and replies to replies ad infinitum) are part of the thread. The term comes via the wacky world of operating system design where it denotes a single process among many but I kind of like to think of message board threads as being akin to wool being spun into yarn - disparate fragile strands being merged into a stronger whole.

When I got here I did find it difficult as well; too cluttered. And I'm a web developer!
While getting used to the site, the important stuff is in the middle of the page. Look for "Latest Discussions". Right below that is the 16 (?) last threads in which people have posted. Basically, when someone makes a post, that discussion (thread) goes to the top of the pile.
At the bottom of this section is a link to the top 100 discussions. This is what you may want to look at later as people on this site are quite talkative and many still active discussions are bumped off the main page periodically.
If you are brave, you may want to look below this section to see "Real World FFF.net". This is where the political discussions, etc go on. They can get heated, so...
Now, once you are comfortable with the site and contributing to started discussions, you may want to start your own topic. If you look to the right of the page (somewhat beside "Latest Discussions") you'll see, "Message Boards".
These are basically general catagories for people to keep there discussions in. If you click on one of those links, you'll get the top x number of threads for that particular section. Also, a discription of what is to be discussed in that particular section is discribed at the top e.g.

General discussions and comments relating to Firefly.

Once you find the section which is appropriate to what you wish to discuss, somewhat at the top right of that page is a "POST NEW THREAD" link. Click that an follow the directions.
A note on posting: I've noticed that many many people here do not look before they post. What this does is make several threads on the exact same thing, at the exact same time. Then people who want to contribute to the conversation as a whole need to post in several different threads. This is somewhat irritating to many people. Also, people tend to ask questions that have been discussed ad nauseum.
Both these issues can be resolved by doing a simple search through google. It is done by doing the exact same thing that you'd normally do with google, but add "site:fireflyfans.net" (without the quotes) to the search as well. This will force google to only search this one site.
