There are some aspects of that smaller model that are better than the larger one I\'m doing. The removable shuttles for example. I kinda nicked that idea and I\'ve had to apply it to this one myself.

I'm building up the 3' beast too. Only so far as the cargo bay atm. Already detailing it up with extra panels taken from... http://www.alexkung.com/scale/serenity/cmain.htm
The amount of detail he goes into and the perfection he wants to maintain means what you see on the model IS what's on the ship. Save having to scrape around for reference pics.
I hope you painted the inside first though...I almost didn't. 
I plan to do an interior cockpit and dining area (but not go into too much detail since there's only a couple of small windows there) and I really need to do something about those engines.

I\'m not using any paint on mine at all. I\'ve used my printer to colour all of the panels. ie the plans are unseen on the inside of the ship with a plain colour on the outside.
Alot of the detail I\'m drawing on with soft coloured pencils, and cut out bits of paper for welded panels. Fitted a few other bits n pieces on the galley. The cockpit was pretty time consuming, no way I\'m gonna do a dining area 
good luck with that though.
Once it\'s done I\'ll spray it with gloss paper fixative. Should give it a more solid metallic appearance.
Overall, I\'ve done the nose, neck, galley with shuttle housings, need to tidy up & strengthen the cargo bay. Then I can start on the engine core.
