Actually the Iris folds away inside the gate. There's a little gap between the front and back, and you can see something between (on angled shots) that probably serves as the projector for the event horizon.

I always thought the thing you saw inside was the inside of the ring with the symbols that spun around. Hehe, not trying to nit-pick the show apart, cause it's my fav. It's just like one of those things that gits stuck in Jane's mind and drives him mad 'til he gets to his bunk.
Ok well....maybe not one of THOSE things...but well, I think you get the idea.
