I would recommend these to anyone who likes a bit of meat to their storyline.
I think it was the idea of the Chinese element to the future culture that helped hook me into Firefly. There is a strong Sino-centric element to Atevi culture as well, part of the reason I like the books.
Anyone else like them?

Love those books! Haven't read them all yet, got as far Bren and the other humans and Atevi getting to the space station. There's more after that particular novel, right? Hmm, gotta get to the library...
It's been so long since I read them that I really can't offer anything more substantive, except that Cherryh blows my mind with her political maneuverings as well as a highly complicated alien culture so, well, alien and, uh, foreign :P I also like that the protagonists of her novels are never evil, only that they have agendas, usually bureucratic in nature, misunderstandings, a dash of not caring about stepping on the little guy.
Back in HS I even named my cat Sootie Ateva.
