*Pain watched Ertia leave. He knew she was having a tough time what with the recent attack and all. Pain let out a sigh and headed for the common shower. He thought to himself as he entered the shower room and closed the door*
Maybe a long shower will calm my nerves and help me think.
*Pain turned on the water, disrobed, and entered the shower, closing the door behind him. He let the water run down his body as he thought of the recent events, his career, the choices he could make about it, and the love of his life.*

"Ertia?" Book's hand dropped lightly to her shoulder, "I didn't think you were Catholic, child."
She shook her head, "I'm not! I wasn't.. I don't know. I'm not me anymore."
Tortured eyes met his kindly gaze, "I'm changing, Shepherd. Goddess help me, I wanted to kill those men today! I've ...when did I become a murderer?"
"You've done what you needed to do to protect those around you." His voice is firm, calming, like a balm, "You are the mother. This ship is your child. And you fought to protect it."
Tears roll down her cheeks and she drops her forehead to his knee, "I killed...killed them. Them...and before them, Wolf's men with that grenade, and before that... I'm... how many? How much blood?"
Book closed his eyes, feeling her grief. How well did he know it? How did one who swore to do good reconcile that oath with the oath to protect? "God knows your heart, child. Trust him."
Remembering that she was a Goddess worshipper he hesitated..."Trust HER. She knows her children, often when we know not ourselves."

six or seven posts back, when Ertia asked Pain and Zoe if they'd seen Shepherd Book. She then found Book in the Engine Room, solving the mystery of who set the ship for hard burn when Kaylee and John were both unconscious.

*Pain turned off the shower, stepped out, and dried himself off. He then got dressed and walked out of the shower room and headed for the galley. Pain made his way up the stairs, past the engine room where he could hear Ertia and Book talking, and leaned up against the doorframe. He sniffed the air, noticed Guy was cooking something and said to him*
Hey Guy what are you cookin'?

John made his way to the engine room to work on the engine and found Kaylee there sobbing to Book. The feelings he got from her the pain and confusion. So familiar. He thought aabout his own past the own blood he'd spilled how it tore him inside when his brother followed suit. He thought about Serenity if he could make it his home and how to prove himself to her crew. He would protect them. This Niska guy was wanted out of their hair he would do it. Carefully, he climbed up the stairs and into Shuttle 2. He was a professional he could get in get out and get the job done. He knew the shuttle wouldn't take him far but he had to try. He disconnected from Serenity and zoomed off. As he flew into the black he heard breathing be him. He turned. River was on the shuttle.
