I do believe you are referring to this pic, one of the first few seconds we see Mal running on Hera. We've established it is a scarf, but here's the pic.

Definitely a red scarf, which the Independents seem to wear during the war -- they're quite visible in the war sequences in The Message as well. Also, a good knittng project as you're trying to work up to making a Jayne hat.

Definitely a scarf,in this pic it isn't that clear but when you watch the DVD it's obvious it's a scarf.
