Gina Torres is on the cover of the current issue Black Enterprise. The article, "The Afro Latino Connection", discusses the lack of recognition that Latinos of African descent get in American society and the world.

It's an interesting article and she looks absolutely beautiful. She is one of several people interviewed. She discusses how she has almost always been cast as African American, and the fear that casting directors have of confusing the audience (how they want Hispanic actors to look what is stereotypically Hispanic).

In her credits listed, Firefly's not mentioned. But I guess they'll know soon enough. Everyone will.

I wonder why they did not list Firefly in her credits. Could it be because it was cancelled in its first season? When was the interview supposed to have taken place?

They didn't have a full credit list of her work, so I'm assuming that they just listed her most popular work. Tragic as it is, most people have never heard of Firefly.
Or at least the people who I'm friends with.

Hi everyone.

I'm the guy who co-wrote the article. Though I wasn't familiar with this site (I came across it by googling to see if anyone was talking about my article), I am a big Firefly fan.

In fact, one of the reasons I pushed to have Gina on the cover was that I'm a big fan of the show (we even spoke briefly about the planned movie!). So the question of why it was left out of the article is simple: I'm a dumbass. I was so sure I mentioned it that in my excitement about having an actress I really liked on the cover, I totally forgot :(

The funny thing is I was actually watching the Firefly DVD the night after the issue was put to bed when the seed of doubt over whether I omitted Firefly took root. Sure enough, that Monday morning I checked and it was, but by then it was too late.

My apologies Firefly fans. I screwed the pooch on that one.

Curious that there's no mention of her role in the first season of Alias. After all, Anna Espinoza, born in Cuba, raised in Russia... that's definitely a Hispanic character if ever there was one. Ancestrally speaking, of course, rather than cultural education.

History doesn't always repeat itself. Sometimes it merely shouts "Weren't you listening the first time?!?" and lets fly with a club.

I picked up a copy on the 24th. Great article. Very cool to read about Gina & see her gracing the cover of a magazine. Excellent work Dudeman.
