I'm just catching up, never saw an episode until I bought the dvd, so help me out. I'm just to disc 2, but I'm getting that this is a post civil war reconstruction era story, where the hero is a disillusioned former confederate right down to the left over butter nut coat. i love that this show borrows those themes and sci-fi's them up for a new generation. The rievers are like a combination of the Civil War Missouri border war bushwhackers and Star Trek Voyagers nemesis, but I don't remember what they were called.
MY question: is there a site where Joss Whedon explains his views on the story development and background?

I recommend starting a whole new thread called "Firefly and the Civil War" and see if people respond.

Just curious, what made you buy the DVD?

Hello DrSyn. Everything I learned, I learned from the commentaries. Oh, and this site.

Yeah i guess that does sound unusual. I started watching Buffy with the Musical episode and thought Whedon had done a great job. I read the reviews on Amazon.com for Firefly and thought I would like it, and i wasn't disappointed. I like a story that starts in the middle, lets you figure out the history as it goes long, and has a past rather than a plot that is resolved every episode. It was worth the gamble of $35 sight unseen.

Welcome to the boards! This may help. Cinefantastique had detailed interviews with Joss Whedon and Tim Minear about each episode, posted just before and after the DVDs were released. I've found it a little tedious to find things on this site, so here are links to all 7 parts.

I'm thinking you're missing something there, Ebonezer. On the back of each DVD slimcase you can see whether there is a commentary or not. Then fire up the DVD, go into languages, and choose the commentary.

Do you know about the Easter Egg?
