Musical contraption from the outer Worlds...?

I saw something today that could have come straight from one of the outer worlds of an imaginary episode of Firefly...
There was a guy busking in Bristol, playing bluegrass fiddle accompanying himself with an amazing mechanical contraption.
This machine consisted of a guitar with a set of pins pressing on the fretboard forming chords controlled by a set of pedals operated by his left foot. The strings were plucked in sequence by a set of cams and cranks powered by a pedal pumped by his right foot, a flywheel keeping the tempo even. The whole thing was totally mechanical, no electronics whatsoever, the click-clack of the mechanism adding a rhythmical accompaniment of its own.
Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera on me to grab a pic.
Anyone else seen anything like this?
Naturally, with typical Browncoat logic, I headed to a nearby Chinese store so I could by some food with Chinese labelling.

That sounds cool. I wonder what it was. Think he just made it up? Sounds like a lot of work went into it!
