Deep Creek, MD is bear country, and Black Bears are fairly common, as well as wild turkeys, bobcats, and white-tailed deer. They even have you sign an acknowledgement of "safe" practices (don't keep food in your tent, don't leave food out, etc.) before you can camp there, but I don't think there's been a mauling in a long, long while. At least several weeks anyway.
