CAVALIER: I think that with Serenity, Mal regained some of the faith he’d lost. Not necessarily faith in god, but faith in the world overall. I don’t think he’s as bitter as he used to be. Which, doesn’t mean he wouldn’t participate in the Indepence War part 2, but well… I’m not going to say anymore, because if I ever to write this (and I might not, but I might… I don’t know; I find myself not wanting to commit the time, but the story will not go away), I already have a few thoughts on this subject, and… yeah. I will not spoil before I start writing. That would be bad. I think.

MISSTRESSAHARA: Wow. Excellent character study of Zoe, and if I were looking to do a "the year after Miranda" fic, the way I would characterize Zoe would be very similar to how you have her here, very similar. But, I think, after a few years, she would move into a new phase of her life. Zoe, I think, for better or worse, has a resilience that Mal just doesn't. She is going to move on, even if she doesn't really want to. So, four years after the events of Miranda, she’ll definitely be different.

Well your right about her resliency and ability to bounce back I just think she'll be a darker, angrier Zoe, and really I think the events will change the relationship between her and Mal. Maybe she will still follow him, but she'll question it, and I think the resentment will be there, deep inside, always nibbling at her conciousness. Mal may have to worry more about Zoe turning on him than Jayne.

Hell imagine if Zoe snaps, her anger bitterness and rage over losing Wash just blows up and she jumps Mal and Jayne has to pull her off. Mal would be oweing Jayne one.

On a different side her anger and loneliness may make her become sloppy, slow, taking unnecessary risks like she did against the Reavers. Some people when they lose a loved one do stupid things and some get a death wish. That could be another possibility, and River, sensing this and knowing how unstable with grief Zoe has become would warn Mal. That would frighten him, worry him, and make him watch Zoe during jobs. Maybe become overprotective and there would be another thing to resent, her knowing why he would be keeping her from doing any jobs and hating the fact he was dictating her life, just a cherry on top of everything else.

As I said, there are a lot of possibilities for Zoe now. Maybe killing Wash was a good thing for her character development, but I RESENT that. But that's a whole other story.

MISSTRESSOHARA, sorry MISSTRESSAHARA : Nice idea about Zoe. I agree that she has been underdeveloped in the past, which I suppose is what you expect with 9 characters and about 12 hours of screen time…
I’m not sure about her resenting the Tam’s though. It was Zoe who criticised Mal for abandoning that luckless townsman during the Reaver attack at the start of the BDM. And she explicitly said: “during the war, we would never have left a man behind”.
So I think she is more likely to blame the Alliance and/ or the Reavers for her husbands death.
ARCADIA pointed out the Mal has just regained some of his faith. It is interesting that this has just happened as Zoe has lost so much of what she had. Perhaps they will exchange places, with Mal lightening up as Zoe darkens?

The Tams leaving is an interesting idea (although not one likely to happen in a TV series, for obvious reasons). In truth, I thought it a sensible thing for Simon to do at the start of the movie. The Alliance had had too many chances to tie him to the Serenity. He has a valuable skill, which would get even more valuable in the more lawless parts of the verse. There is a good chance someone would betray him, but he has River to warn him of that. Note that if events had turned out slightly differently at the Maidenhead, the Tams would not have ended up back on Serenity, and the Operative would have been attempting to blackmail Mal into giving up someone who had already left.

I agree that if by some miracle Simon could return to his old life he would do so immediately. What would happen with Kaylee would depend on how solid an item they were by that point, but there is no law of nature trapping Kaylee aboard Serenity. Kaylee is socially ambitious: look at her during Shindig, and consider why she was attracted to Simon in the first place. If she had a chance of becoming Mrs Kaylee Tam of Capital City, Osiris, why would she not want to take it?

I disagree with Zoe holding Mal responcable. She is a soldier and she knows a comander does what he thinks is best and does the best he can. They screw up people die. That just life. I am sure plenty of people she liked in the war died under Mals command, it is just a part of it. Since she always struck me as stuck in the soldier mode in the series I see her staying the same. Being bitter? Yes. But i don't think she would blame Mal. But thats just my take on the character.

I agree with Nutluck on that particular point -- Zoe understands how war works. Like she indicated it jayne, it was very unlikely anyone was going to survive. In fact, if the Operative hadn't agreed to patch up the hurt, I think only Inara and River would have walked out of there in tact, while Jayne and Zoe might have crawled out, and everyone else would be dead. *shutters*

Thanks to everyone for all the thoughtful replied to this post. I've really enjoyed it. Sadly, the story I was aiming on getting help with hasn't amounted to anything signicant -- just a Simon/Kaylee plot I am not sure what to do with. Might write it, might not (since I am not typically an S/K shipper, though I do find them sweet). We'll see.

If Inara dies, does anyone else think that mal and river might start a relationship later in the show?

I just can't see it.

The age difference, his paternal attitude, the different stages in life that they're at... Mal's not into little girls, and what he can give River romantically pales compared to the bond they already have. It'd only add that icky "daddy complex" factor.

Not to mention, Mal's really bad at letting things go. Just trying to let Inara in is a struggle for him. If she dies, he'll just see it as another reason to retreat emotionally. I can't see him giving love another chance if it's ripped fromhim like that.

I can see quite a few things happening 10 years after. The main one is nearly everyone has left in one way or another.

Kaylee and Simon: Simon wanting to settle down on a nice safe planet to build a family after Kaylee decides that would be best.

Zoe: perhaps a politican for the Rim worlds. Zoe was the sometimes the peace maker, yet will pick up arms if she has to. I can just see Zoe agruing in a parliament or something.

Jayne: Preacher with guns? Book was the only passenger who didn't really look down at him for his mistakes and with the events of the movie, perhaps changed his ways (mostly :p)

Inara: falls out with Mal and goes back to the companion house. Possible becomes a mpre influencal person in the guild.

River: After 10 years is finally sane (mostly) and becomes Serenity's second captain after a stint at life as a companion. Has her own crew, own problems and her own ideals. ALso a genius running a spaceship, what could go wrong...

Mal: [missing in action (against the Reavers)]
