firefly for childeren - too young

I've seen a few flashes of her! Yeah, you know, I thought she was drop dead gorgeous as Nandi, and she's very pretty on the OC, but it just isn't the same. She doesn't have that same... exotic bearing.

And unfortunately for her has the bad luck of not being able to have another hot makeout scene with Nathan. I guess she was beautified so that Mal would not out-shine her, what am I saying, he did anyway.

But she definitly is very pretty, I wish I has those eyes.

Let's not forget that Objects In Space has one of the most terrifying (almost-)rape scenes ever filmed, and the actors never even touch one another.

The power of Firefly is not that so much is shown explicitly, but that you care about the characters so deeply that even implied violence becomes extremely intense.

I suppose that's something that needs to be taken into account. The more empathy the child is capable of, the more deeply he or she is likely to be affected. In that sense, older kids may actually be impacted more powerfully than younger ones.

A friend of mine took her daughter, she was about 4, the daughter not my friend, to see the very first Harry Potter. No problem. The girl loved it. The next Harry Potter she was scared to death. Go figure. Maybe she was to young the first time to understand what was happening. Who knows? Maybe the 8 year old can handle it better than the 13 year old can. As the people above me pointed out let the parents decide. Even if they don't completely understand what is happening, as they get older they figure it out. From what I see on TV these days they have probably seen more violence and sex than ever Firefly showed.

Well I'll definitly go for anyone 14+, my most successful convert, love her dearly, was 14 at the time and I wasnt around when she watched it ever, and yet a few days later she came to me bouncing up n down saying how much she loved it. And when I say successful convert, just mean she got her family into it, they bought their own set, saw the movie n all, plus her email is now roughly FireflyRocks... so that's 14.

When I watched it, good gosh that was coming on 4 years ago... I was about her age, and I dont think i got it all, but then, was run out of order w/o the pilot back then. So, 14+ is my vote.

I'd say you dont want to show them too early simply because imo it is more fulfilling to watch something the first time and understand the whole thing, rather than saying, when they learn the concepts of gov corruption or prostitution they'll think "just like firefly!"... imo the other way round is better.

Saw a clip show of TV's more controversial moments on file cabinet. While it doesn't show the Superbowl wardrobe malfunction, it is pretty racy.

In fact, I was going to post a link but it is pretty bad. No, it is really bad. If they show this crap, then Firefly is walk in the park.

Comparing Firefly to the worst of TV is probably not fair but it does show what kids are exposed to today. I'll still give it to the parents w/ a warning. I'll also tell the kids so they can put the screws to the parents.

now I am going to probably catch some crap for this but I have let my daughter (5) watch shindig, I mean I have let her watch the princess bride(she loves it) and that is alot like shindig, with the sword play and such, and my daughter loves the pretty dresses. I mean is there anything in that epiode that is as bad as shrek? I dont think so. Anyway she loves shindig but I dont think she is ready for the rest of the series yet. as far as an appropriate age, depends on the episode I would say.

I, too, have let my almost 5 year old charge and my 10 & 6 y-o nieces watch Shindig. The 10 year old is the only one who stayed tuned to the end... the others were very interested in various aspects at the beginning (all 3 are girls - so pretty, pretty party scene!) but got engrossed in something else before the sword play. My little charge (I'm her nanny) has 2 brothers who watch some really graphic stuff (Spiderman 1 & 2/Dr Who/Harry Potter 4) and she pretty much has seen it all - though I wouldn't let her watch any other episode than Shindig! Having said that I wouldn't have let the boys watch any of the above myself - that was their parents choice (they're 6 & 8) and although he's fine with all of the above, the 6 year old freaks when Shrek belches at the villagers in the first film!! - go figure!

I think it should only be shown to kids over the age of 14 but 8 is way to young.But I think it all depends on the kid,a lot of kids nowadays have watched R rated movies and played Matured rated games before the age of 13,so their not going to say what's Inara doing in the bed with the other man or be scared by a few violent scenes.I'm letting my brother(13 years old) watch it now because I know he understands the content or I at least I think he does.But we're talking about the content in Firefly but does the child actually undersatnd Firefly and appreciate it and unfortunatly in this pop cultured world we live in most kids won't appreciate Firefly for what it truly is.

Oh and War Stories should defintly not be watched by kids under the age of 13,Lesbianism,sexual refrences,and some nasty torture scenes.
