I had a similar initial reaction to seeing that, but in an effort to suspend disbelief I decided there must be something special about Vera that required an atmosphere. For instance with the ram-jet idea it could require air in the barrel to put the bullet on an accurate trajectory, and inertia would carry it to it's target without regard to an atmosphere.

I suppose Jayne might not have known better. The Ram-jet rifles that have been experimented with use a conventional cartirdge to get the projectile going. Once in the air it ignites. There would be no need for a warhead since it would be going several thousand meters per second on impact. More exciting are the electromagnetic accelerator, or rail guns. Back in the 80s the military was playing with one that would launch a 20mm projectile at over 40,000m/s, or about 50 times the velocity of a modern rifle bullet.
Getting back to the plot, I did not see that coming. Too bad though. Lots of room for character development there if she was what she was pretending to be.

I also just watched it for the first time. I love the offer of "Vera" made by Jayne. That was such an aweseom scene.
Book telling Mal about the "Special Hell" there were just too many good scenes in this one!!
The best scene was at the very end when Mal confronted Inara about why the 'fell'. When he walked away saying "I knew you let her kiss you" The look on Inara's face was absolutely pricelss!! I have not laughed that good in a long time!!

If you loved this ep, you absolutely must watch the deleted scene from it. It's just as hilarious as the rest of the episode. It's a shame that it had to be cut for time.

If you liked Christina Hendricks (Saffron), you should be pleased with the other guest stars as well. Edward Atterton, Larry Drake, Melinda Clarke, Richard Brooks to name a few. This show had bar-none THE best guest stars! They really complimented the show. Very talented actors/actresses. Reminded me of some of the B5 eps (like the one with Wayne Alexander as the Inquisitor). Firefly so ROCKS!!!
Let's Do Some CRIME!

I may not recognize the names you gave but I did recongize several high profile actors from:
"The Sentinal"
"Dark Man"
There were others too but I do not recall names or where I seen them before, I was very impressed with those they cast into the show as "supporting" roles.

I always did like Larry Drake, try to catch all his pics...(even ::sob:: Dr Giggles), but seeing Melinda Clark again was the icing on the cake. If you haven't seen her Zombified performance in Return of the Living Dead 3.... well, at one point, the thought crossed the mind,"Well... technically, she's not totally dead... so it's more like borderline necrophilia..."
Oops, did I say that out loud?

"In space no one can hear you scream... but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try if I feel the need to."

My Fav scene from this episode is:
At the beginning when the outlaws have the coach pulled up and the badguy was saying "after that u gunna give me some one on one time with the missus"
and Jayne replies "whoah u might want to reconsider that last part, see I married me a powerful ugly creature"
to which Mal responds "how can u say that? how can u shame me in front of new people?"
Always laugh at that scene..

That's adorable. The whole thing is adorable. I am, much as always, late to the party, and pleasantly surprised to see familiar people. Malcolm, I know you from Rosemary Edghill's mailing list.
I just had a chance over the weekend to sit down and watch ALL of Firefly (not the deleted scenes, just what Netflix has available). It was quite an experience!

As I become more and more jaded in my reactions to TV and movies, more and more what I've come to appreciate are genuine surprises.
This is precisely why I like Trash better than Our Mrs. Reynolds. The twists and turns in that episode outdo the original :)
Of course, the Special Hell speech is probably second to the fixing the bible/hair enchanges between Book and River for pure comic genius in the show.
"If you take sexual advantage of her, you're
going to burn in a very special level of hell.
A level they reserve for child molesters and
people who talk at the theater."
