What do the Chinese symbols mean?

They are found under certain Firefly logos/products, such as the patch on the following link...

I really want to know what it means. I have a tattoo dedicated to the wonderful 144 episodes of BTVS and i want one dedicated to the wonderful 14 episodes of Firefly and it seems like a smart thing to find out what it means before it is "scarred" onto my body.

Just thought I'd add that 平静 is pronounced ping2jing4 / píngjìng.

The cantonese pronounciation is about the same,
although the tones are neutral, essentially flat.
