I was watching Fawlty Towers the other night and something clicked in me. An understanding that had been waiting to resolve itself for many years now. Any idea not new but for a long time hidden within the haze (that is not a pun on my name) . “Sybil drove him to it!” Suddenly Basil Fawlty fell into sharp focus, suddenly his character made perfect sense. This sad defeated little man who for years had been bullied and emasculated by this woman beaten down by her again and again until all he had left was his small impatient acts of rebellion, meaningless and manic, violent and desperate and all to easily defeated by one sharp shriek of “Basil!” from his tormentors lips.

She is aloud a social life he is not. She is aloud friends he is not. Sybil drove him mad!

DON'T MENTION THE WAR!!!

Sorry, someone had to, and it may as well have been me.

Basil is one thing, but what gets me is poor Manuel, on his birthday trying to thank Basil for giving him a job.
