My brother's chickens are tough and they intimidate his two minpin dogs, and they also chase cats out of his yard.
But he keeps them in his chicken coop now, and no longer lets them roam around the yard. I think the main reason why nobody wants chickens roaming the streets is because of their incredible ability to crap everywhere, and chicken poo is some mean stuff, a cross between paint and tar.

THANKS ! for the info. As you may gather, I've not lived on a farm. This is all quite interesting to me.

I grew up on a small farm and never once saw a chicken eat a mouse -- course, our cats probably made it impossible.
I always laugh at those who think chickens should only be fed "vegetarian" diets. They don't realize chickens are omnivores. Our chickens' FAVORITE food was the grub worms I used to throw over the fence to them (I saw them eating bugs and other worms so I figured they'd enjoy a juicy treat - and boy howdy did they!)

Seems to me if you own an orchard and you don't want to use pesticides a flock of chickens might work. And, they'd fertilize the trees a little. Nature... one big toile... I mean "cycle"!
