There was, if I remember rightly, a spoken into voiced by Mal on the broadcast version of Firefly. It's missing on the DVD set. Was the into something that was added to try and make the series comprehensible after Fox decided not to air "Serenity" at the beginning that really didn't belong, or are we really missing something from the theme/intro on the DVD set?

Good question - there was one done by Book in the earlier parts of the series too, which I really liked. I guess it was just something added by Fox to help new viewers, but it would have been nice to have on the DVD.

You do remember rightly, and you are correct, they have indeed gone missing. I say they because there were three different versions. Book did the first version, then Mal did two, the second worded slightly differently and a bit more sarcastically from the first.
They also left out the "Last time on Firefly" montages...um...oh, and the gag reel is MUCH shorter than the original version. Others more resourceful than I can maybe tell you where to find the full gag reel. I got mine on CD from another browncoat.
Did I leave anything else out?

Grrr
I didn't watch a lot of episodes when it was broadcast. Like I said in another thread... I felt like I was thrown in the middle of the story. I gave up on the series quickly. Keith (my housemate) got me to watch it towards the end of it's run. Once I saw "Serenity" I realized what Fox had done to it and realized that I had completely misjudged the series. Now that I've seen most of the DVD set in the right order I know Firefly was awesome.
Tzao-gao! Now I need to find the original intros somewhere. They could have at least been an extra on the DVD!

You remember correctly... There were actually two intros one by Mal and one By Book.
If you would like to dload those two intros follow these links:

Book's Intro:

They come from: http://www.wavsite.com/ and you can also get a fair amount of Firefly, Buffy and Angel audio clips from this site as well.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! except... Chanain says there are two versions of Mal's intro. Anyone know where I can find both?

The second version is also on that site...I think.
I remember seeing Mal's intro listed in two seperate episodes so maybe the second one was the slightly different one? I just dloaded the first one and disregarded the second one as a repeat.
This is the link for the second mentioning of Mal's intro. However judging by the file label it's not the quote they have printed out. As I have no sound on this computer (work) I can't check it.

OK, now that I've heard them, yeah.... they're just explaining what we all should already know. Must've been Jos' way to try and undo some of the damage Fox did by skipping Serenity and going all out of order. I can see why they're left out of the DVD.

Hey Browncoats
Earlier I posted this thread
http://fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=3279
At the site refered to it has the intro monologs on all the episodes. It also has a different monolog on the Original Pilot by some nameless announcer.
They change from Book's opening to Mal's at Ep 5 or 6.
Book's is a very general description about the 'verse.
Where as Mal's is more specific to him, Serenity, and his crew. I wasn't aware that Mal had two versions.
The nameless announcer's is a general desc of the verse but gives a little different info from Book's
