I think, that maybe the Italian player provoked himunporpose hoping that he'll do sth stupid. I can't imaging Zidane beeing such a moron unless he was seriously provoked.

Whatever the truth of it, Zidane is a brilliant player, and although he's had a fair few incidents, it's not like he goes looking for trouble.
Materazzi did, and did he ever find it. (In terms of reprehensibility and foolhardiness, on a par with insulting Mrs Cobb, I'd call it.)
Anyway, Zidane went easy on him. Ignoring the rights and wrongs (...but not much, since I am not keen on snidey gamesmanship), I've rarely seen anyone get the heid put on them with such precision.
If that particular dunt had been delivered to the traditional address, Matty would have been auditioning for Marv's part in Sin City 2.
