Final Fantasy: Advent Children

So I rented this over the weekend and watched it. I had a couple thoughts.

1. The animation was really great, especially the textures. Clothing, metal, reflections in glass and water. Truly outstanding. The best I have ever seen. The movement of the human characters was excellent as well. The only thing that was a little off was the actual faces and hands of the characters. Still not quite right, especially when they talk, but still very good.

2. In comparison to the other Final Fantasy movie, I think the "look" of Advent Children was better. Forget plot and animation (since the other Final Fantasy is a little older). The color contrasts like in the forest with the white trees and Vincent's red cape. Or the gray look of the town, Edge, contrasting with the heroes and the big dragon. Pretty neat-o.

3. The complete lack of the natural laws of physics was cool. I mean, the movie is called Final FANTASY, right?

The story was a little hard to follow for someone who has not played the game, but I could figure it out.

Overall, very enjoyable. Anyone care to add their thoughts?

I did enjoy the film, but I had a few qualms as well.

I kind of felt that the movie was unfinished. Maybe it's from playing the game, but it felt like there wasn't enough of a story. I think they could have done more with the film plot-wise.

Then again, the graphics are so good that you almost forget anything else.

Amazon had it for cheap ($14) yesterday, so maybe just buy it. If you like these kinds of movies. Personally, I thought (in terms of story as well as animation) that it is superior to the other movie.

it is a great movie with an intricuit plot and wild action sequences... definately a rarity here in the states...

I rented it and immediately went out and bought it.
you gotta see the movie twice to understand the plot, then again I never got past disc 1 of the game, I could go on and on but I'll just say ditto to the first post...

and I've seen complaints that the movie is too short, which is true... it's a movie, not a video game

the movie is great and is definately a must see

I saw the trailer for it playing at the local videostore and stood entranced at the images. As soon as it came out, we rented it, and I watched in rapt attention. Plot? Characters? Oh, those were in there?!? I was too involved in the animation to be bothered with things like that! I have never played the games, and have no idea about the story, but I love computer animated movies. This one got me because of the very things you mentioned; textures, movement, everything. Yes, the face thing still bothers me a bit, but I quickly got past that.
Enjoyable movie...I hope they make another.

Chris, whatcha gots ta do is plunk down the 25 bucks or so and buy a used Playstation so you can play Final Fantasy VII! It's worth your time, seriously. It was the first video game I ever played beyond like Tetris or something and it openned up a whole world of cross-cultural folklore. Firefly fits perfectly into the strange Anime inspired tradition. These games are seriously amazing and bear only the slightest resemblance to the movie you saw. Imagine a movie that lasts 40 hours! That's what "playing" these games is like. 40 hours of intricate political and spiritual twists and turns. You know how they have these three day shadow puppet plays in South East Asia that folks stay up all night to watch? That's what I'm talkin' about, all in the privacy of your own home! After you finish with FFVII you can run out and get IX and X (skip VIII, everyone does). You'll be glad you did!

I agree. Seems that fans of the game who played the game for hours and hours to beat it wanted a movie that was also hours and hours long. The movie was more than an hour and half, plenty long for a feature length film. To be honest, it was quite difficult to follow the finer points of the plot but the overall story is pretty easy to grasp. Cloud is good. Kadaj is bad. Sephiroth is REALLY bad and wants to take over the world. Rude and Reno are comic foils (They were great, by the way. I loved them). Tifa is.... well, kind of hot.

This brings me to another point. I love the between scenes movies in computer games. I have often wished that more movies would get made like this one. It would be really great. In the extra features, the director comments that they creators wanted to make a movie for the fans. I wish that happened more often for other games.
