ahem. anyway... It all depends on the kid's maturity and what they can deal with. I've been watching adult shows with gore and whatever for as long as I can remember, but my sister still gets upset at really mild stuff, and she's 12, so it varies from child to child.

I'd say, no.

I'm in my 40's, and there's things in it which make me uncomfortable. I'd not allow any children watch my copy of it.

I did watch the DVD with my nephew (he was 16 at the time), but I'd not let my 10 year old niece watch it.

There are two issues here.

The one we have addressed in the
main is the question of who's old
enough to watch Firefly.

The other one was the question of
whether or not you buy it *for
someone else's kids.*

I maintain that the kids' parents
need to have some say in the matter.
They might not consider such a gift
as appropriate for all the kids.

My son is 8. We let him watch all the eps with the exception of War Stories and Heart of Gold. Well, I will be 17 soon so it was not too long ago when I was there age. I think Firefly is appropriate for ages 12+ to be honest. Man, I wish I had you as a relative to buy me Firefly DVDs...

Thank you for all the responses. All the kids have seen Star Wars, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, which have a bit of violence in them but not much sex. I figure they get enough of the sex stuff from TV.

I'll give the DVDs to the parents and tell them it was a broadcast tv show shown on Friday nights during prime time. I know one pair will probably watch the whole thing before giving it to the kid. The other pair probably won't.

I'm 15, the only reason I would say not to watch it if you're young is that I sort of felt awkward watching Heart of Gold with my parents in the room. Besides that, i would say to show Firefly to children young (meaning all the other episodes), it needs to carry into the next generation. War Stories is torture, but I mean there's not even blood, okay I've seen Saw, Saw 2, Cabin Fever, and all the other gorey movies you can think of, but I mean it's really not THAT bad. A few of my friends have birthdays coming up and you know what they're getting? (Ok, I'm cheap so I can't afford to buy them the whole season...but I'll get them the movie, hopefully that'll do it) I think it's honestly more important that the dvds are being bought, and it is not the giver's responsibility to mandate what the receiver watches.It's not like some of these awful shows like "The OC" or "One Tree Hill" they're so sex-oriented that I can't stand to watch them. And these are shows on TV now!

Ah yes, the OC. I work with very stupid people in general, and there's a TV here and I get subjected to all kinds of crap when I first get here. (American Idol, OC, anything that caters to low denomiators, it tends to be on until I turn it off). Correct me if I'm wrong, but did I or did I not at one point see an actual rape scene on the OC? It was fully clothed people, but there was this girl whimpering and stuggling and crying and this guy was pinning her down and like, biting her and talking to her (sound was off) with this really ugly look on his face. I would say that beats about anything else in terms of "things I really don't want to see on the screen".
Sorry, got off track. Doubt anyone here knows the answer anyway.

It's honestly quite probable, the stuff sickens me. Of course I watch Lexx too, which probably makes me a hypocrite, but Lexx was on late at night and didn't really advertise to children. All I hear at school though is girls going on about these other shows, and I think it's a real indicator of how rotten society becomes when Firefly is not on tv

Possibly the only thing the OC has going for it is that the actress that played Nandi is in it, but I won't watch it not even for that. Thank God my parents don;t like it so I don't have to watch it at home.
