I wholeheartedly agree about Welling, and about Michael Rosenbaum as well. If anyone was born to a part, it's Rosenbaum as Lex. (That said, I think the TV show seriously needs better writing and plots. Too much of it is unreal, like the perpetual low camera angles and the refusal of so many characters to say anything in situations when any real person would. Little thinks, like "Thank you," or "You bet." Instead, we get poignant glaring, and too many stormings out of rooms. All way overdone. Oughta rename it Superboor.)

I too never really liked the look of Mr. Reeves, for some reason. He didn't quite match my ages-old impression of the first Superman comics. And the new guy looks too much like Reeves.

I do admit to curiousity about Kevin Spacey in the Lex role.

I'm looking forward to it.

Smallville offends me though, as a fan. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the production is fine, it's just not Clark Kent.

My beefs:
-Smallville is not within an hour of Metropolis (that was the whole point; Metropolis is too far away for anyone except Clark to get there and back quickly).
-It's less about Clark Kent than it is about Young Superman, with his entire rogues gallery, Perry White, Lois Lane, the Daily Planet, two members of the future JLA, the Fortress of Solitude, and as many anachronistic references as the writers can shoehorn in.
-Smallville is entirely too hip and modern.
And, a personal beef:
-Lex Luthor is not a spoiled rich kid! This reimagining effectively guts one of the coolest villains in comics; Lex Luthor never inherited anything from anyone. He was born in Metropolis (and likely wouldn't even know a place called Smallville exists if not for that Daily Planet reporter), in an area called Hobb's Bay, commonly called "Suicide Slum." His mom was typically drunk, and his dad just wasn't an issue. Grew up in an orphanage, with nothing more than what he could beg, borrow, or steal from the other kids. He was a shrimp, always picked on and abused. This made him hard, cunning, and ruthless. One day, he offered to shine shoes for pennies. That first penny was the start of Lexcorp. Everything that Lex Luthor has, he earned, with blood, sweat, and tears.

Metropolis is his city. He made it what it is, with his own hands. Lexcorp revitalized it, brought in infrastructure, compelled STARlabs to open up their main offices, made the Daily Planet and Galaxy Broadcasting into world-leading media sources. . .

That's why he hates Superman so much. The Kryptonian is not just a usurper (claiming Metropolis as his own), but the antithesis of everything Lex is. Everything Superman has was given to him; his Kryptonian blood, his powers, his sense of honour and duty and pretention. He hasn't earned anything.

This is why the war between them won't end even when they're both long dead. It's a clash between irreconcilable powers. The Man and the Superman.

However good Michael Rosebaum's performance is (and I'm not denying that the kid can act, he's good), the character as reimagined for Smallville is fundamentally flawed --nothing more than a foil for Clark, instead of a true Nemesis.
