Hey 'C'man always a pleasure to indulge in a little Chrisisall curiosity :D
I'd have to opt for season One over season Five.
Season one felt as though they were writing to establish an audience, the stories were imaginative and entertaining. Season five felt as though they were giving the audience what they wanted, case in point: the ubiquitous or should that be the omnipotent SPIKE. The most shoe-horned character in the Whedon verse. As such, for me the stories in season five though at times enjoyable had too many contrivances for ultimate pleasure.
I prefered Angel when he was struggling from the basement with barely competent sidekicks at his er....side.
I still don't really understand the concept of Wolfram and Hart in season Five and I could not fathom the part the 'gang' played in the building which seemed full of busy bodying people whom our characters took little to no time to familiarise themselves with! I mean what the hell were ALL those people supposed to be doing?
Anyway still a top show by any accounts but Season One stands proud. (For me anyway)

But I did like Spike in season 5; then again, I just liked Spike. But there were moments when season 5 was "Angel N' Spike".

Well, having only seen half each of seasons 1 and 2 (more of season 2) and read the transcripts for the last three seasons
Wha?? You read the transcripts without seeing the episodes? I don't get it...

Y'know I'm wonderng if there is an argument for having a Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel dvd box set and labeling it:
Spike - the Vampire, the Slayer, the Savior!
