Who owns the television rights to Firefly?

Why would it be anyone other than Fox? Universal are not making a TV show, so they would not be willing to pay for the TV rights. Fox are not in the business of giving IP away, so I doubt TV rights were included in the deal for no reason.

But Uni might have wanted all rights including TV comic book merchindizing etc. I would dout a company that large would want only film rights when most of the money from that kind of movie will most likely come in merchandizing. Plus since they own Sci-fi (and have since merged with NBC) they might want to do the show if the movie is a hit. Also I think FOX might have been willing to sale it for a choice price since they weren't palnning on doing much if anything with the show anyway.

....Thus the present conundrum. Tash and I had the same conversation Scafell and Early are having, almost word for word it seems, about a week ago.

We came to the unfortunate conclusion that we didn't know.

We need to find out for sure, and put on a BIG push to get all 14 eps re-run a few times.......that and the DVDs should make a BIG statement to SOMEBODY!

Intelectual proplerty rights can be sold but I don't think that they can't be split up into separate parts such as rights for TV and rights for movie. So, if Universal owns the rights to "Firefly" or purchases them in the future, then the fate of Firefly is in their hands. Universal could choose to make a movie, make a tv show, a mini-series, or even make Firefly: The Ride at Universal Studios if they wanted to.

"Rights" is a blurred, crazy cutthroat scramble for the best contract dealing with very specific rights.

I think "rights" can be divided a million ways, in the worst of circumstances. Hope not in Joss's case.
