RP2 - Last Time on Firefly...

Last time on Firefly...

Mal set up a deal with Badger to pick up some goods in Serenity Valley on Hara. While en route, Mal got a wave from Niska, who has apparently taken up with one Jubal Early. Neither Niska nor Early had anything immediate to say, so Mal told them to wave him when they felt like talking.

Wash, having not slept for 3 days for fear of River killing him in his sleep, has begun having sleep-deprived hallucinations and has taken the ship off course. Serenity is now rapidly headed toward the edge of explored space.

Zoe has been attempting to get Wash to wake up completely from the drug-induced, waking nightmare that is driving him, while Shepherd Book goes looking for Simon, hoping the good doctor can give Wash something to either bring him out of his nightmare or put him more fully to sleep.

While Inara points out the ship's current path will take them into Reaver territory, Jayne and Zoe try to convince Mal of the insanity of heading to Serenity Valley for a pickup...

Inara looks up into Mal's eyes, a soft smile on her perfectly painted lips, and says with a raised brow- How kind of you to worry about my business, Mal...but, as anyone in their RIGHT mind *glances significantly at Wash* can see--we are heading a bit out past the point where civilized clients can be found just now...are we going the long way around the 'verse to Hara?

Inara looks around the room

is ANYONE else worried about the fact that we're heading into reaver territory? I can assure you, my talents would be wasted on them.

Niska (to Early): "I hope you finished the preparations while you were aboard thier vessel. It's time to close our grasp."

..WASH'S MOVE

Wash's eyes meet Mal who's got him by the scruff of the neck. He's eerily calm. "You got your head. Everybody's heads.. They're back. I'm so relieved. ..Okay.."

He pushes one button without looking as he says this, then flicks three switches above their heads. Again without looking. The ship is now slowing down. Wash's voice is distant and oblique.

"..but it's medically impossible! How'd all your blood get put back in? And where's Lou? I-I don't get it.."

The ship is slowing down, turning, and aiming back on course, but it doesn't accelerate. Slowing and turning to the proper direction (towards Hera), Serenity is at this precarious moment practically motionless in space, on the edge of the outer rim, barely touching Reaver country.

Wash looks back at the console and his hands absently touch the controls. Tears well up in his eyes, but his expression is emotionless.

"I-I don't know what to do."

Removes Mal's hand from Wash's collar, and puts her hands on either side of Wash's face

To Wash (gently): "Sweetie, you were dreaming. There was no Lou, no one lost their head. Everyone's fine. You need to get us moving back toward Hara, then you can go back to sleep."

Reaching the infirmiry, Book finds Simon obliviously refilling his shelves.

Simon is streching up to a high cabinet, still fiddling with the inventory in the infirmary.

Suddenly, Wash makes his adrupt course change and Simon falls back and trips over the exam chair and his head hits the base of the chair with a unpleasant hollow thunk.

{Hey! Nobody poked fun at my working title of this, our episode : "Badgers Betrayal".
I suppose we could call the continuing threads like this "Badgers Betrayal" Teaser. Then next thread woud be called "Badgers Betrayal Act 1, and so forth.

Any other suggestions for a title? I came up with that one ONLY as a working title - untile we cam come up with a GOOD one!}

Turning up the intercom that had been carelessly turned down, Book calls in a oddly calm voice,

"We've got another problem, Captain."

Inara sighs in relief as she watches the capitan and Zoe calm Wash.

She glances over to the doorway, where Jayne has been lurking this whole time.

She straightens her wrap and smiles. Yes, now...now that we're not all going to be eaten, would anyone like to join me in some tea?

*heads off toward the common room, hoping to meet kaylee on the way and ask her about a bit of that "fresh" wine to calm her nerves.

As she passes the infirmary, she hears shepherd speak into the intercom. She glances in--and falls to her knees beside a profusely bleeding Simon.

Inara steps back, as Shepherd Book lifts Simon onto the table. She hands him gauze from one of the infirmary's many drawers. Wo de ma..oh Shepherd...there's so much blood.

Inara rushes to the doorway and sticks her head out--the shouts for the Capitan, Zoe, Jayne, anyone!

With characteristic empathy, she returns to the bed to hover over the pale doctor.

[Looks around room] Says to everyone:"Come on friends, lets have a sit-down meal. Come on, you too River. You're lookin' a might thin lately. Big dumb grin on his face, looking into the eyes of the lady he loves. "Oh. Okay. Anything for you.."

He pushes another button without looking. Beat. Zoe sees his eyes change from a glazed over expression to that of actual sober concern.

He looks away from Zoe and carefully moves away from her a few inches to get a better look at the button. He pushes it again.

"That's not right."

He looks up and flicks three switches above their heads. Then pushes the button again. Nothing happens.

He pushes the button again. Nothing happens.

"Excuse me dear."

He politely moves his Zoe aside and with a freakish and sudden sober attitude, he goes through a routine check of the controls. He doesn't like what he sees.

"Ai ya! Hwai leh!"

He flicks on the intercom. His voice is stoic and monotone but with a hint of abject fear. "Kaylee? Bridge to engine room what's going on down there?" He flicks off the intercom.

He pushes the button again. Nothing happens. He's none too happy about that.

Wash frowns, "I'm none too happy about this."

Hears Book on the intercom and sees Wash's distress at the controls. Yells down the hall to Mal:

"Cap'n, it would seem food'll have to wait for the moment."

As Mal reappears on the bridge

"Looks like we've got a little more trouble'n we bargained for. Book's called up trouble in the infirmary. Also,..."

To Wash: "...Wash, would you like to fill us in?"

"Fill us in? What you mean? It won't go."

His hands are dancing across the console with the expertise of a veteran. He's pulling up scans and self-checks on viewscreens and moving doodads this way and that as he talks. The disorientation appears to have left him for the moment as his brain focuses on the task at hand.

"I mean I could use bigger words for ya if it'd help but it won't. The controls aren't registering. Nav com is fine. I can set coordinates to anywhere, but the engine won't respond. But I'm not showing anything wrong with the engine. She just won't go."

Beat.

"And this isn't me. Nothing I did up here coulda done this. I didn't break it. It ain't broken. All the system checks appear fine. It just won't--"

He flicks on the intercom to the engine room.

"Kaylee? Could I talk to ya please darlin' at yer earliest convenience?"

*peels back Simon's eyelids..notices the black of the pupil has almost obsured the blue usually present.*

Wash climbs under the console and removes a panel, he then climbs in among a bunch of wires and other shipguts.

His voice is muffled through the metal, but still audible, "Don't mean to keep ya in suspense sir. I'm on it. Ship won't go. Don't know why."

He's not delirious anymore. He's a man with a puzzle to solve. Pretty much all anyone can see of him at the moment is his legs, underneath where he usually sits.

"Somebody git Kaylee! Or ANYBODY go down to the engine room and tell me what you see!"

Beat.

"Uh oh.. There's a note here. Some writing. I need a torchlight.. Earl something? Who's Earl?"

I'm not sure if they still need a stimulant, depressant, or straight jacket for Wash...I'm not even sure we could find anything in all of this...

Wash climbs out from underneath the console with a piece of laminated paper. Still sitting under the console, he holds it up to the light. Squinting, he reads it out loud.

"Early. Bird. Gets the worm. Nightcrawlers too. That. Seem funny. To you?"

He looks at Mal curiously.

"What's it mean, sir?" Wash then immediately passes out, finally succumbing to sheer exhaustion and chemical imbalance.

River begins to shake her brother lightly. She sees a slight stirring in him, but nothing more. Inara rushes to the other side of the bed, where River is standing.

"Bao bei, bao bei, darling, it's fine-he will be fine, just a bump on the head!"

She takes River's hands away from Simon's shoulders, and clasps them with her own.

"Calm down...he will waken soon--he's just sleeping!" It breaks her heart to see River so upset.

After much consternation, the problem is found. Calling to Mal: "Cap'n? Sorry it took so long, but I know why we won't go anywhere. When Wash hit the accelerator, a couple of connections fused together and killed her. I don't know how it happened. Those things shouldn't even be related. *sigh* I can fix it (I think), but it's gonna take a while. What's going on up there? Everyone's yellin'..."

Zoe enters just as the Cap'n starts to reply.

Early's move

Early studies Niska's men as they stand at attention. They are all wearing jetpacks.

A dozen solid men, trained and fearless. Still, I'd rather work alone. Oh well, I owe the old man a favor... thinks Early.

12 men, plus Early and Niska. The deadly team opens the bay door of Niska's ship and they float silently into space. Towards Serenity.

The team is heavily supplied with armor and weapons. They are ready for battle.

Suddenly, Niska's jet pack seems to malfunction. Niska flies off in the wrong direction in a crazy figure-eight pattern. Niska's cries for help can be heard through the audio com link.

With a sigh, Early powers his jets and goes after him.

Book grabs a gun and ammo out of a storage locker, and exits the bridge behind the captain, at a run.

Early's turn

Early wishes he was working on his own, he's not used to following orders and working with a team. Still, the old man saved his life, he reminds himself.

Early moves to the front of the line and taps Niska on the shoulder. "Niska, I'll circle around the back way, I want to secure the shuttles. I'll meet you and the men in the cargo bay once the ship is secured. Good luck."

Without looking back at Niska, Early slips into the shadows and heads towards Inara's shuttle. A huge weight lifts off his shoulders as he separates from Niska and his henchmen.

Just as he approaches the shuttle, he hears the voices of Mal and the fake preacher. They voices are growing louder. Early knows he can handle the captain in a fight, but he is not so sure about the man pretending to be a shepherd.

Helps Kaylee get started on repairs, then hears the commotion in the Cargo Bay.

To Kaylee: "You stay here and keep working. I'll check it out."

Creeps quietly through the ship, gun positioned against her shoulder, keeping an eye out for intruders. As she nears the entrance of the Cargo Bay, she slows and checks the positioning of Niska's men. Seeing a clean shot from her cover, she opens fire, taking out those in her sights.

End Move.

Book quickly climbs to the shuttle area, and sneaks up behind Early. He fires his gun at Early's kneecap, dropping him to one knee, and sending a random gunshot into the room from Early's gun.

[NISKA ducks down as ZOE kills three of his henchmen. He signals his own spaceship, which sends a volley, grazing SERENITY's hull. Those not expecting it are thrown, as the ship lurches and NISKA leaps into action, rushing down the corridor and ducking into the infirmary- locking it behind him. Safe for the moment NISKA struggles to catch his breath (he hasn't done this type of thing in many years). It is then that he realizes that he is not alone.]

Book winces in pain as his gun flies from his hand, but he reacts smoothly. Reaching behind his back, he pulls one of the unused syringes from his belt, and throws it through the air at Early.

Book watches in satisfaction as the needle penetrates a crack in Early's shoulder armor, and the speed of the thrust forces the liquid into his body.

In a rage, Early swiftly punches Book unconscious. But he feels dizzy. "It must be Clover Potion, I recognize the smell. Damn! I knew I should have gotten the crack in my armor fixed!" he says.

Inara tries to run away. "Hold it right there, Ambasasador." Early says. Inara stops.

With his last few breaths, Early ties up Inara and gags her. Panting with exhaustion, he pulls a medical kit from his utility belt and injects himself with the antidote. Then he lasps into uncosciousness.

Rapidly discharging shell after shell until all are dead. Signals Zoe that all is well with him, six dead. Rapidly reloads pistol.] Says to himself:"Tzao gao, where the hell is that Liou mahng Jayne at when I need him?"END TURN.

Jayne's turn:

Jayne heads from engineering at top speed, cocking Vera and thinking to himself that just because your paranoid, that dosn't mean people arent actually out to get you.

Jayne gets to the walkway above the cargo bay, take a quick look around to get the enemy positioning, and takes two quick bursts shots with Vera. The powerful rounds rain down onto Niksa's men taking one through the throat, passing through to stike the man behind him in the abdomen, both fly back and crumple in a heap. Several rounds ricochet around the hold while more rounds find their deadly journey's end in Niksa's men. At the end of the short exchange 8 of the intruders lie dead or dying on the cargo floor between Mal and his shots.

"Cap'n, get outta there now!"
"Ain't nothin' gonna be alive down there on Vera's next pass, and I don't want ya dyin' from a bouncer."

Inara's breath comes heavy and labored as she struggles to get to her feet. Bound hand and foot, and gagged to boot, things do not look promising.

She glances down at the unconcious Early.

Hopping directly onto the man's crotch as she goes by, she works her way to the shuttle's door, where she finds Shepherd Book unconcious as well.

Taking a VERY deep breath, and putting her chin up, she takes a tentative hop out onto the walkway outside her shuttle door.

..WASH'S MOVE

Having been climbing through the bowels of Serenity from the bridge, just as Niska is about to bring the scalpel down on Simon, Wash falls on top of Niska from above and crushes him to the floor.

Fortunately, (or unfortunately depending on who you actually are) when Wash jumped Niska, the scalpel sliced Wash's forearm instead of Simon. However, compared to what happened to Wash the last time he saw Niska, he just winces at the pain while he grapples with Niska, attempting to remove the scalpel from Niska with one hand and repeatedly punching him in the face with the other.

"NOW. HOW'S. THAT. FOR. PAY. BACK. YOU. HWOON DAHN!"

Following Mal, who followed Niska to the infirmary. Looks into the infirmary and sees her hubby beating Niska senseless, knocking the scalpel knocked to the floor in the process.

Audibly cocks shotgun, aiming for Niska's head through the glass of the infirmary window.

To Wash: "Think he might've had enough, dear. Now why don't you let the captain have his say, too? I think he might have a few words for our friend here."

Keeping gun trained on Niska, tosses over her shoulder to Mal:

"Sir, would you like a few words? He ain't going anywhere."

..WASH'S MOVE

Wash is a mess. First, all his clothes are on inside out. Second, his clothes are torn and worn and look like they're hanging on to him by a thread. Third, he's got cobwebs and dust and grease in his hair and he's scraped himself in a couple places along his torso so he's bleeding a bit, mostly mild skin abrasions. Oh. And the slash on his left forearm. Again it appears to be a flesh wound - no tendons or anything important. Parts of him look like he might have first or second degree burns, from the less kind places within the walls of Serenity. Part of his hair is matted down with grime and gook, and part of it is shooting straight up. He's bleeding and he's tired.

In reaction to his wife's more sensible tone, Wash stands up from the unconscious body of Niska, and then looks about the room, blood (both his and Niskas) dripping from his hands. (actually. Mostly his.)

He looks over at Simon, "Quick! Rope or something to tie him up with. Before he comes to! Then," he looks down at himself, "maybe stop me bleeding cuz that can't be good."

He looks back up to see his Zoe, "I'd hug ya and kiss ya all over but I'm a mess." He sneezes.

Then he just stands there, too tired to do anything but too exhilirated to faint again. He just breathes heavy and looks sadly at his Zoe.

"Sorry I'm such a mess. I'll go get cleaned up." He says, not moving.

Early wakes groggily, cured from the poison. Book is still unconscious on the floor, but the naked Companion is no where to be seen.

Early hears gunshots and realizes he must escape. He ties up Book and seals the shuttle bay door. Early ignites the shuttle's engines, and they fly recklessly into the Black.

Almost immediately, sensors flash on the radar screen.

"Well this is most troublesome. Reavers." Early sighs. "It looks like things are going to get a bit more complicated."

Inara winces as the vibrations from her shuttle taking off--taking her home, her livelihood, with it--make her lean into the rough railing, splittin her skin even more

Come on..come on...almost got it...

she gasps as the wrist ropes fall away, pink with her blood.

She hurries to lean down and untie the ankle ropes, and remove the gag.

Inara scurries down into the hold, rummaging around in the various stacked crates for something, anything to cover herself with.

She finally comes up with a dingy towel, courtesy of Jayne's weight bench--oh by all that's holy!! What a stench--how can a woman keep her dignity in something like this?!

sighing, Inara wraps herself in Jayne's sweat towel, and trudges up to the infirmary, where she hears the voices of the crew.
