This line has always bugged me. First off, for a long time I thought she was saying "I'm looking for the boy with the shimmer in his eye". Which didn't seem to make much sense. Then I looked up what she was really saying. The line just stands out to me as being so basic and not something a person would say. Really it reminds me of really lame old skits where a person will state the setting out loud. i.e. "I am waiting for a bus".

So, does anyone have a way to put my mind at ease about this line? Is it a saying I'm just not familiar with? Is it a reference to a play? Some sort of joke about those lame skits? Anything besides a weak bit of dialogue?

It's an intentional bit of lame dialogue, she's trying to change the subject.

Like saying "The weathers been nice recently"

More insane ramblings by the people who brought you beeeer milkshakes!
"I had a rose named after me and I was very flattered. But I was not pleased to read the description in the catalog: 'No good in a bed, but fine against a wall'." -- Eleanor Roosevelt.

I think it might have been a rapid, not thought out change of subject on the part of Inara to get away from Ath's talking about the less public parts of her profession

I third that. It was a blatant, semi-diplomatic way of telling him she didn't appreciate his crude remark, leading nicely to his next line about her blushing.

The real question is, what the hell is shimmerwine?

She'll turn you in before you can say "Don't turn me in...lady..."

Well, it's not champagne shaked with glitter. I figured that one out myself. The hard way . . .

Even with that being the case would anyone really say it that way? It's like speaking your internal dialogue. You'd say someting more along the lines of, "Do you see the boy with the shimmerwine?" or "I'm going to go look for the boy with the shimmerwine". Anything other than "I'm looking for the boy with the shimmer wine". She might as well have said, "I am at a ball".

Grrr I was really hoping this was a specific saying. Instead it will just always grate on me like the use of "Capitol City". Every other city or place name was cool except that one.
