Most SF weapons are too big and clumsy to be of much use. As for the Jedi...never bring a knife to a gunfight!

Who understands there's this guy at a back table in the Creature Cantina just south of the Sea of Tranquility on Luna who can get me one one of those MIB hideout guns. Anybody got a saucer I can borrow?

I would agree that most Sci Fi's really drop the ball when it comes to practical sidearm designs. Uncool scifi guns make me cringe...maybe they make Joss as well, which was a factor in using 6 shooters...

I still never figured out why its only contemporary and slightly futurtic genre's that max out on laser sights and other aiming tech. Hi Sci Fis (Sterio sci Fis ;) tend to drop back to shear skill and beam weapons with cool effects.

Ditto regarding automatic weapons which appear to vanish as tech goes up - or at leats can't hit anything with any realiability or technical assistance. Surely little guns (as mentioned) with huge volumes of fire and unlimited ammo, maybe with AI like (similiar to modern camera technology) auto targeting, would be a viable and likely high future development...

In terms of guns on frontiers KISS would be alive and well - robust simple designs like 6 shooters. Bolt guns and even black powder for wher game was plentiful. The episodes where thye discarded the higher tech "crap" weapons would have an element of truth - reloading brass is relatively easy the hardist thing to produce is the primers.

Also 6 shooters may be acceptable legal standard where they travel.
However- machineguns are easy to make - which is why the kalasnikov ak47 gets made in small operations in pakistan afghan border etc and as siad the sten can be made very simply with minimum tools. So locals would oreintate to simple hunting rifles possibly with rifles and pistols of the same calibre - as in the american west.

However with all; that time it is hard to believe that simple robust laser technology (even pulse let alone continuos fire) hasn't been developed - alls it needs is evolved batteries and emitters than we have now - after that it is simply imputting power - and I think most societies are going to be able to come up with some basic power generation even if it is a mule attached to a dynamo, waterwheel, windmill. And fundamentally there are some real advantages to lasers over projectile weapons in many environments - bullet drop and recoil being key elements

But being serious it is simply a plot device to allow the heroic fanatsy - it would be hard for the heroes to dodge and defeat 20 enemies firing machineguns. It is also hard to think that Serenity would not pack more guns in its hidden rooms - a few grenades (incredibly low tech) and a taser and some simple machine guns. there is a real disconnect between the technologies employed i.e. spacesuits and 6 shooters side by side - but hay I enjoy it
