If you've seen metr0man's trailer, compare it to the witless crap the fox people used to promote Firefly. It's so obvious that they either never watched the show, or had enough contempt for it that they intentionally misrepresented it.

Because Fox put it in a time-slot, that lead to low ratings because no one (Well, very few) people were home, which lead to its downfall, which lead to its cancellation. And they didn't show the pilot first, so people got confused. If it was on a Tuesday, and the pilot was shown first, it would still be on. Even if the pilot wasn't shown first, it might still be on.
Ultimately, Fox was stupid for puting it on Friday.

Firefly would fit great on UPN's Wednesday 9pm schedule following Smallville. I heard Angel is gone after this season. A WB Wednesday night Scifi block would help put UPN out of its and our misery.

I'm a fairly new FF fan so I'm not sure if the topic's been beaten to death yet or not. But has anyone considered petitioning to some other network to pick up the show? I mean, SciFi picked up Roswell after it was cancelled. Buffy got bought by someone, I can't remember who. I'm sure if we could get enough signatures together we could get our show back on the air. What do you think?

Another apporach is that taken by FOX rival The WB. They invested in quality programming, not just money but time. Shows like Gilmore Girls and 7th Heaven, now ratings staples, started off with seasons of high quality, poorly rated shows. This 'if you build it they will come' eventually drew audiences that allowed The WB to expand its programming to additional nights, again with quailty programming and the patience to allow a show and thus the network to succeed or fail on its merits rather then initial ratings. Thus WB, once the "Frog" or network programming has developed into a real alternative for America's mainstream television audience.
Oddly enough, that's exactly what FOX used to do as well. They stopped doing it, and now they're losing out to WB and UPN by trying to be something they weren't originally - that is trying to be ABC, NBC, and CBS.

my take on why firefly was cancelled off fox network focus on ideological change in executive's perspective on show development and speed of audience capture. nielson ratings system being a major factor for sponsors endorsing fox network for broadcast of commercials. something has happened at fox that has changed network from developing and launching new shows and actually giving them a chance to find their audience. due to a string of flops and blunders fox cannot afford the luxury of letting a show find it's footing, as opposed to the other major networks which have established prime-time lineups. the fox affiliate in my area is finding it difficult to find sponsors, has trimmed it's prime-time to TWO hours, shows many sitcom reruns from other networks, i think they fired some of the news broadcasters for on-air ridiculing of "joe millionaire",etc.,etc. these factors all point to a network in MAJOR TROUBLE! by comparison, the WB network is currently what the FOX network used to be like. i truly believe that if firefly does come back to tv it will be on abc, upn,wb,scifi, network.
