Really, it's okay to not like Buffy or Angel...no reason to get all pre-teen about it. But are those universes that much harder to believe than Firefly's?

Yeah, Spike doesn't even have spikey hair, Angel does (sort of). Spike's got more like helmet hair that's glued to his head. I always wonder why people make judgments about shows they really know nothing about. Is it just because they can't get past the surface of them, or are afraid people will judge them by what they watch? If so, I feel bad for them.
(By the way, Rugbug, I wasn't talking about you, in case it came off that way. Just borrowing your quote.)

Oh and yes, i do believe Firefly over Buffy, cuz vampires are just a bunch of cliche bullshite.

Spike. He reacts to crisis with earnest bravado, while Angel second-guesses and broods. Angel brooded for like seventy years. That's lame. Spike takes action. Spike won his soul back. Spike wins, Angel worries.

Overall, I would have to say Angel.
I love Spike, I really do, but I don't think he works as a main character. He's always best when he's sparring off a main character, be it Buffy or Angel. He certainly added to the last season of Angel, although in fairness that series was very funny before he arrived. He just stole all the best lines when he showed up!
Spike was there to highlight the difference between his style and Angel's. Spike is action, Angel is reaction. Spike went and got his soul (although personally I think he initially intended to break Buffy's heart once he had it, but that's another issue!) Angel had his soul forced on him. Does Angel brood and worry more? Of course he does! Spike ~knew~ what was going to happen, and even he was shocked by how he felt, to the point that he actually hurt himself trying to cut it back out. Imagine that being sprung on a creature of utter evil like Angelus without any warning whatsoever. Seventy years of torment sounds about right. But in the end it was Angel's careful planning and willingness to rub shoulders with the bad guys that ... well, saying more would ruin the finale for anyone that hasn't seen it yet, but those who ~have~ seen it know what I mean. Could Spike have carried the same plan off?
As for who is the best looking, this is the point where I admit the person I lust after is Xander, which apparently disqualifies me from any conversation involving the hotness of guys accoring to all my Spike obsessed friends! But Xander, like Spike, is a character that works best in the background rather than in the limelight. They're both incredibly funny, they both had some fantastic storylines and they both grew and changed over the years just like the main characters of each show, but for me they were always there to provide the other point of view, to say the stuff we always wanted to say, to throw a spanner in the works every now and then and to be there for the people they loved when it counted. I don't think either would work half as well as a main character.

I'll go with Spike for 500 Alex.
He's just got a certain quirky humor to him. Although Angel would kick his ass in a fight. Angel's just way too angsty for me. I know Spike got some angstyness but he's just so damn funny in his broding (sp?).
Also Astronauts to Cavemen anyday. Although like Angel Cavemen would beat the astonauts down like whiney

OK so I have now bought and am most of the way through season 5 and gotta say- SPIKE ROCKS ... but its the way Spike and Angel spark off each other that really makes it- as Joss says in one of the commentaries "We finally found the right girl for Angel ... and that's Spike."

ok iv seen every season of buffy and angel and i recon spike is the best. everythink that James Masters has done is good and he had a good band ghost of the robots.
