Is Angel's season 5 as good as season 1?

As for "better" than S1, I can't really say. *I* liked it better, but I love all of Angel (and Buffy, AND Firefly) anyway, so it's kinda hard to pick favorites. I loved that S1 established the show, gave us its mission statement, etc., but I think the writing, sets, story arcs, and acting and dialog all got tighter as it went on. To me, S5 is the pinnacle of Angel; it was at its peak.

I even liked the Pylea episodes (S3), though. They were campy, kitsch, and fun... and Cordy's outfits didn't suck. :) And Lorne is just a hoot and a half. Maybe two hoots. Maybe a whole lot of hoot and a little bit of nanny.

The whole Cordy/Connor thing creeped me, but there were some other good storylines going on there, too, so it was worth the watching. Hell, I even watched 'em twice (gets easier the second time).

Just saw Unleashed and Hellbound- whoahh.
Now, I really liked the first season, was hot and cold about the second, but the fifth has really hit the ground running for me (no doubt in large part because I find Spike such a great character), and DAMN, what great chemistry all around!
It's been said that Joss was in between Buffy and Serenity, and had a lot of fire in him at that moment, and boy does it look like he heated up everyone else on this season.
It's also been said that the first six or seven shows are the season's weakest-

Okay, season 5 blew me away except on two points. Killing Fred and switching her with the smurf was dumb, and the visuals on the last few minutes of Not Fade Away were somewhat lacking.

A great bunch of eps, though. The answer to my own question for me would be...almost.

I finally finished watching all of the Angel series recently, and here's my view of Season 5.

I think it has a lot of great episodes, but it's also very hit-and-miss, IMHO. I LOVE the whole series, mind you, but it seems that most of the seasons have some lesser episodes, that's just how t.v. series are (well, except Firefly ;)

I'd say the best parts of season 5 are the returns of Spike, Cordy and Lindsey, and the ending episode itself. Illyria's a fun character too, as are the brief appearances of Connor. I think the ending ep of the series, though rushed, does quite a job of tying things up without drawing them to a final conclusion. It's a pretty satisfying ending!

That said, I honestly can't see any reason for fans to find Season 5 better than most of the others, aside from the Spike/Buffy connection. Taking Angel as a series in and of itself, I still think the best seasons by far are 2 & 3 (and yeah, I like the Pylea eps too!).

1 & 5 seem very hit-and-miss to me, though admittedly they have some great episodes in them. 4 is bizarre, but I still enjoyed most of it.

Well, having only seen half each of seasons 1 and 2 (more of season 2) and read the transcripts for the last three seasons, I will say that judging from writing alone, I like seasons 4 and 5 much better than the first few. Actually, Serenity is my first love, then Firefly, then Buffy, and lastly Angel, so I'm not sure if the lighter tone of the first part of the fifth season appeals to me. But I will say that I wept three times while reading the scripts for Angel's last season: once when Cordelia died in "You're Welcome," once when Fred died in "Shells," and for much of "Not Fade Away." When the writing alone is that powerful, I tend to think season 5 is great. We'll see if that holds up when I watch the episodes this fall. Looking forward to it.

However, I do like the message of Not Fade Away, open-ended as it may be. Thematically, it's as closed as a...um, really closed thing.

I read the scenes from Not Fade Away, and I think it read better than it played out onscreen. The final result seemed less epic when actually seeing it, but maybe that's just me- it WAS really great anyway, though...
