Ratings for the ninth episode of the first season of the new series, The Empty Child, on US television on the Sci Fi Channel, have come in: the telecast had a household rating of 1.04 with an average of 1.2 million viewers, a drop of a tenth of a million viewers and the lowest broadcast of the new season to date. (The broadcast took place on Cinco de Mayo, however, with viewing levels possibly affected in the evening; ratings on the broadcast networks were also noticeably down that night.) Season-to-date, Sci Fi reports that Doctor Who is currently averaging a 1.29 household rating and an average audience of 1.5 million viewers for the season.

I'm not certain of the context, but it does seem to me that that's a very small number of viewers.

Is it getting the Firefly Fox Treatment or something?

Shame, because that was an OoG - league episode, and everyone should see it, and the second part too.

(It's got an American in it you know.)

The sci-fi channel doesn't have that many viewers to begin with unfortunatly. I recorded it and watch the it twice
Well I'm assuming I did because I record and rewatch every episode of Dr. Who that airs.

a cable rating over 1.0 for scifi is pretty good. If I remember, Battlestar Galactica was getting about a 2.3? And that was a runaway success! For Doctor Who to be getting over 1.0, on friday nights during the summer is better than I would have expected.

It was a very good episode, by the way!

Oh, OK then.

At least they are giving it a decent shake here. 7.00pm on a Saturday. The Anthony Head episode a couple of weeks back raked in 8.3 million couch potatoes.

Which was nice.

Actually, should be at least 8,300,002 because no-one canvassed me and Mrs G.

Wait till you get a load of Part 2.

Best escape from a cliffhanger ever, shelves and an ending that is so wallowingly great, by rights it should be disappearing in a welter of mawkish sugariness. But it doesn't. Perfect.

Is he really an American? I mean is he even from earth? We just know what he said he was and how he spoke, but in Doctor Who accents of time travelers' mean nothing.

Anyway, I loved that and I loved the fact that it made a big deal that the ending was not typical, and thus something to be savored.

The character was from the 51st Century and posing as an American flier during WWII. But I think the "American" reference is more towards John Barrowman himself. John was born in Scotland, but raised near Chicago and done acting work in the US and the UK...in fact he was in "The Producers" which came out on DVD today.

yeah, patsrule is right: not only is sci-fi channel cable, it isn't basic cable (you pay almost twice as much to get it, along with other stations)
so considering, that is actually a good rating.

And it was a great two part episode!

I quite agree about it almost being mawkish and sugary... But then, I plead being very tired right then, and might have been crying- alright, there was blubbering and s@#t.

'Just this once, everybody lives!', indeed.

There are two themes to this new version I really like. One is the unfolding of exactly what disaster overtook the Doctors' people. Kind of an Incedible Hulk/ Bruce Banner thing, where you know this guy is always going to be moving on, and the best he can hope for is... to save the world!? (Yeah, that's what I just wrote 8-)

The other is just how dangerous this life is, for the innocent bystanders. Is The Doctor a catalyst for disaster, or is he just a Tourist who shows up where the volcano is about to blow?
