Seriously, in the UK at least they're both some of the hardest proffessions to break into, but for different reasons. There are only about 3 or 4 colleges that do a decent vetenary science course so they can affort to be REALLY picky (I mean top 0.1 percentile plus lots of relevant volunary experience type of thing).
Unlike many of my classmates, I didn't want to be a vet 'cos I wanted to study healthy animals. I got a pretty decent degree but the fact that 6 years later I still haven't found an ecology related job shows how competitive things are. That's why I've gone back to Uni to get an Animal Science MSc.
All I can say is that out of the 50 or so classmates I started with, only about 6 went on to do anything biological, but they are extremely happy (if poor!) so if he's really committed I say good luck to him!!

I will have to let him know. He has expressed reluctance to "cut animals open". He mentioned the other day that he wants to work with exotic animals.
I think he just wants to move to Australia and live with the kangaroos!
