Question about canon

Hey all:

I have a question as to what, if anything, is canon re: what Mal did right after the war ended, and how long it was before he bought Serenity? Ditto for whether or not he went back to Shadow, and status of his mother and the ranch, etc.

I'm working on some fanfic, and although I'm happy to make this stuff up, if there is canon out there on this, I'd prefer to work with it.

I'm not aware of any accepted story about the reason that Mal was able to afford Serenity. My best guess would be that after the war, the Alliance took over the ranch under eminent domain to open a recreational facility for veterans. Or maybe just a straight sale to an interested buyer.

I like the first idea best because it gives Mal yet one more reason to dislike the Alliance, and I think he would appreciate the idea of sticking it to them with their own money.

And I think his Mommy is probably gone.

It probably took some years to find his way back to Shadow. I would guess that the Alliance was not especially eager to repatriate enemy combatants.
