If you liked the Western aspect of "Firefly", you could check out "Deadwood". We just rented the first season on DVD and it was great.

I was never into Westerns before "Firefly", but I've got a bit more of a feel for the genre now (not so disconcerted by the dust and horses as I was), and "Deadwood" is definitely first-class, character-driven TV.

I'd thought of starting Deadwood (friend's reco: "You'll like it except for the bad language") but I am so conditioned that I'm afraid I'll be sitting there waiting for Serenity to come in for a landing.

Well, I confess, every time I heard the theme song, I got an electric jolt of "Firefly!" But no, it was just the twang of fiddle and guitar setting off my Pavlovian reflexes (and heartbroken yearning... but that's another story).

That said, the main protagonist, Seth Bullock, has a lot of the same qualities as Malcolm Reynolds -- steadfast, decent, conflicted, and handsome :)

I really liked the first two seasons of Alias. It got kind of crappy after that. A show with good writing; but, not SciFi is Northern Exposure. My husband introduced me to it after I started taping Numbers.
Another (non-Sci Fi) show that is great is Spooks (in the US it's called MI-5).

Spooks had a good first series, but it got tedius after that. That one is on terrestrial TV haha.

Ok, that sucks. I have to purchase that series on DVD. I'm up to the third season of SPooks and I agree it is getting tedious.

Andromeda season one: Yes, without reservations.

Andromeda season two: Maybe, if you really liked the first.

Andromeda season three: Not really.

Andromeda season four: No.

Andromeda season five: Avoid at all costs.

Have to come to the defence of Babylon 5.

The graphics really are not that horrible at all. Extraordinarily good, given the state of technology at the time, if y'ask me (which I realise you're not).

Careful scripts, arcs, plotlines and mixed metaphor time bombs that would come back to roost sometimes years later.

OK, it has aliens, but they are good. Enigmatic ones; corrupt buffoons that commit atrocities, but for whom you have real sympathy; the Great Andreas Katsulas as one of the greatest alien characters ever.

Commander Ivanova; a sense of humour; one person flattening a crowded bar; bad guys that are worse than Reivers.

ultra cool spaceships; combat moves that do not look like the spacecraft use carburettors.

Leading man changed in mid series; Bruce (...but he's a bit lightweight, surely...) Boxleitner joining an excellent established ensemble cast, rocking like a bastard, and walking away with the whole deal.

Being threatened by big warships, but it's OK because Delenn gives good threat.

Will Robinson being completely identifiable.

I would recommend Dr Who all the way. I don't understand why you don't like the new series. The series from Chris Eccleston to date. However being from England , don't you already watch it??? However you like Andromeda??????????? Next you'll be telling me you like Lexx. LOL. Yep watching B5 aint no bad thing. 'Babylon squared' goes down as one of my fave sci-fi episodes of all time :)
