Niska dies,
and that it's Jayne who kills him. Ana was cool, and the whole involvement that the crew had with the situation was believable, but I think that the torture that Niska put them through would have lasting effects on the crew's relationships, let alone physical damage. After all, we see that Mal hasn't quite recovered from his "War Stories" wounds by the movie; certainly, less tough members of the crew would have even more noticable changes by that time. But really, it's the episode's conclusion, and the removal from the story of a great and menacing character that shakes my enjoyment of the episode. I think that the villain could have been put to a more climactic death by the one who hates him most: Mal.

The reason we ultimately went with Niska dying the way he did is because we wanted to show Jayne trying (and failing) to make up for the mistake he made in Ariel; we also wanted to put Mal into a situation where he doesn't get to become the hero (which, especially in regards to Inara, is gonna screw with his mind and lead him back to the darker, more aloof Mal that we see by the beginning of the events in the film).

As to why we killed Niska off, we wanted to tie up loose ends from Season 1 and allow ourselves a 'clean slate' heading into Season 2, and Niska's death felt like the best way to resolve his particular storyline from "War Stories". We'd initially discussed having Mal be the one to kill Niska, but when the episode became more and more about Jayne and his attempt to absolve himself of his guilt over Ariel and become a hero, it felt right that he be the one to be responsible for killing Niska; I also felt that, like I said, it'd give us more layers to work with in terms of sliding Mal backwards into his aloof, darker personality if Mal wasn't the one to 'get the job done' in killing Niska.

As to any residual effects from what happens in "Hero Complex", the events of that episode further Inara's decision to leave the ship, contribute to Book's decision to leave the ship, and have a profound effect on Kaylee's psyche (which is really evident in "Property Rights" and her interaction with her parents). Also, I can tell you that we're going to be seeing some profound stuff happening in regards to Zoe and Wash and their role(s) on the ship in coming Season 2 episodes, and that the events of "Hero Complex" are going to play a part in what's coming up.

Shameless bump... because we believe in our stuff and we know you'll love it.

An update folks:

We have our 5th episode for Season 2 ready to go. It will hopefully be posted within hours... and it is fan-bloody-tastic.
(I can say that, because I didn't write it.)

For those of you who are not familiar with our project, Still Flying is a fan-based site dedicated to a "virtual continuation" of Joss Whedon's "Firefly" in the form of scripts of additional episodes. We've rounded out Season One, completing it with seven new episodes (including a season finale based on "Serenity: Those Left Behind" from Dark Horse Comics).

Season Two is dedicated to exploring the question, "What would things have been like if Joss Whedon had been able to tell the story of Serenity in 22 episodes rather than 2 hours?" Our story will take you to most of the same places the movie does, but the path along the way will be a little different, and a lot longer.

We'll see some old friends and more than a few old enemies. We can't promise that we'll entertain you as much as Mister Whedon would have, but you should know that this project has been put together by those who care about the show, and we're taking this bird up out of love.

Like most Browncoats, we know that Whedon will return to us with another movie, book, or some other way to continue the tale he started in "Firefly." Until that time, we'll be here. We will hold the line.

We can't show you exactly how Joss Whedon would've done it, but we can tell you...
