The first season of Angel is my second fvorite season of any Joss show outside of Firefly. I did like season five a lot too, but there was something special about that first season. I love origin stories, watching the pieces come together, watching relationships work out the kinks. That's what I enjoy. I also really liked Wes the "Rouge Demon Hunter," and one of my favorite episodes was the one where he and Angel have to share the bike and Angel has to wear the pink helmet. Priceless. But, I recognize, that is my preference. All the seasons of Angel are good, but one is my favorite.
For the record, since you have my favorite season one scene, here's my season five fave: the episode where Loren has to confront his lack of sleep is hilarious. The scene with Wes and Fred who are drunk and waiting for the elevator is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. When he remembered that he hasn't pushed the button I died.

The pink helmet scene was in the second season.

Agree that it really kicks into gear in episode 7 ("Lineage"), but there's some good things in the first 6, too.
"Conviction" and "Just Rewards" (eps 1 and 2) aren't real standouts, but they do a good job of setting the stage for the upcoming season. Spike is great in the second one, as you'd expect him to be.
"Unleashed" (3)... Hard to find anything good about this one. Gee, a boring episode written by Fain & Craft--what are the odds?
The idea behind "Hell Bound" (4) was good--to do a really frightening, "Blair Witch" kinda ep. Problem was, it didn't turn out near as scary as they probably hoped it would. Or at all, really. It also would've been nice if the story could've had some kind of emotional resonance for Spike--being haunted by ghosts from his own past, people he'd killed, for example--but instead they were just generic nobodies, and the whole thing kinda fell flat.
"Life of the Party" (5) was one I didn't like much the first time I saw it, but every time I've watched it since, it's grown on me a little more (like "Superstar" on Buffy). Wes and Fred completely steal the show in this one. The only thing I really still don't like about it is the Gunn storyline--just not my kind of humor...
And "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco" (6) is one that I think most fans don't like, but is probably one of my favorites in the entire run of the series. The idea of it is as a tribute to the Mexican "Luchadores" films of the 1950s and 60s, which I think most people don't realize, and therefore don't get or like the concept of this episode. But the way Number Five's story was used to portray Angel's growing disenfranchisement with the work was great, and then Rob Kral's score (with the Latin guitar) just completely put the whole thing over the top. And with LA having such a large Hispanic population, it was nice that they finally did a story that featured them so prominently. I guess it's not an episode that suits everyone's tastes, but I love it.
(Also, I own the shirt Wesley wears throughout, which is very cool.
)But yeah, once you get to 7, it's pretty much a non-stop run of fantastic episodes right through to the end (with the exception of 9, "Harm's Way", another Fain & Craft dud). For a solid block of 15 or 16 episodes, it's the only thing of Joss's that comes close to matching the consistent level of excellence of Firefly.

S1 is my favourite by a long shot, but S5 is it's spiritual successor in many ways ;)

vote for season 1...
which may say more about my stage of life than the quality of the show... oh, and I haven't actually finished watching season 5...

Season Five is as good if just for the Fred/Illyria transformation. Argh, that just ripped my heart out. Actually most of the Illyria/Wes stuff was Just.So.Tragic. I had a hard time watching parts of it.
I could've done without much of Seasons 3-4....

I can't believe the insane amount of spoilers in this post, Chrisisall I'd avoid coming back here again as it could ruin season 5 for you.
But is season 5 as good as season 1? No, it's better. Much much better. Season 1 is probably the worst season (and by that I don't mean it's bad).
Angel season 5 is firefly good. Dare I say it, it might even be better.
All the characters have so much more depth, the storylines are much better, the emotional impact is incredible. The only film media I've cried during are Serenity, the Buffy episode The Body and an episode of Angel season 5.
